Lamine Yamal: joint top of the La Liga assists chart and a Ballon d'Or podium
Lamine Yamal has 8 La Liga goals and 6 assists for Barcelona and finished third in the 2026 Ballon d'Or. Here is why he is the sport's present and its future.
Lamine Yamal finished third in the 2026 Ballon d'Or, behind Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé, according to NBC Sports and Wikipedia. He is also the player with the best claim to be the main attraction of the next ten years.
The numbers
ESPN has Yamal on 8 La Liga goals and 6 assists from 10 matches. That puts him third in the scoring chart, behind Raphinha and Mbappé, and joint first for assists with Espanyol's Javi Hernandez. NBC Sports confirms the 8 goals.
Barcelona are second on 27 points, behind Atlético Madrid on 28 with a match more, according to ESPN. They had won nine of their first ten league matches before losing 2-1 to Real Madrid on 25 October. Yamal did not score in that game. Flashscore says he had a first-half chance that went wide and bent an effort inches off target late on.
What nobody else does
Yamal comes in from the right on his left foot, which every defender knows and almost none can stop. What makes him different is the second half of that action: he can finish across the keeper or slide a pass to the runner, and the defender has to guess which. His 8 goals and 6 assists show he does both at a serious rate.
Age matters too. Football has had plenty of exciting young wingers, but fewer who also share the lead in their division for the final ball. That combination is why his name sits alongside Mbappé's on the Ballon d'Or podium.
What's next
Barcelona have a Clásico defeat to answer and Atlético Madrid to catch. A decisive Yamal display in the next big match would remind everyone that third place on the Ballon d'Or list is a starting point.
