Round table: Fenerbahce beat Liverpool, United and Madrid come back, Como score nine

The Golden Era round table for Wednesday, November 4: Fenerbahce beat Liverpool, United and Real Madrid come back, Como hit nine, plus JJ Gabriel.

Kwame: Welcome to the round table for Wednesday, November 4. Twelve stories, a full Champions League night and a few transfer rumours that need handling with tongs. We start in Istanbul, where Fenerbahce beat Liverpool 3-2 under interim manager Dirk Kuyt and ended Liverpool's 100% start.

Shiv: Trey Nyoni scored his first senior goal with a deflected low volley. Liverpool led. Then Mason Greenwood's free-kick hit Jérémy Jacquet's stomach and wrongfooted Alisson. Archie Brown tapped in, then crossed for Vedat Muriqi's header. Six Fenerbahce starters had 1,086 Premier League appearances between them. Liverpool's whole eleven had 1,241. A gap of 155.

Rico: Muriqi came on for Romelu Lukaku, so the substitute won it. Somebody at Fenerbahce read that hand correctly.

Kwame: Real Madrid also left it late. Federico Valverde struck in the 92nd minute to beat AEK Athens 3-2, and that is seven straight wins under José Mourinho.

Shiv: Kylian Mbappé's equaliser was his fourth goal in four Champions League games and his 16th of the season. Vinícius Júnior started on the left after his two-match La Liga suspension. Madrid needed a 92nd-minute winner. Good for the record, less good for the nerves.

Kwame: Barcelona had an easier evening. They beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Camp Nou, on Unai Emery's 55th birthday.

Shiv: Lamine Yamal scored in the seventh minute after Joao Gomes played a blind pass straight to him. That is his 13th goal of the season, plus 11 assists, and the Independent calls him the highest-scoring teenager in Champions League history. Raphinha added two after the break and now has 19 goals in 13 Barcelona appearances. Villa have seven errors leading to goals in all competitions this season, joint-most among Premier League clubs alongside Sunderland. Emery has lost 15 of his 16 away games against Barcelona.

Rico: Fifteen of sixteen. Even the birthday cake had a bad night.

Kwame: The headline number came from Lens, though. Como won 9-1 away, equalling the Champions League record margin of eight goals. Liverpool and Real Madrid managed it at home. Como did it away.

Shiv: Anastasios Douvikas scored a hat-trick and seven different players scored. Como have 19 goals in four games, second only to holders PSG on 20, and sit fourth at the halfway stage, above Barcelona, Manchester City, Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Kwame: After the earlier 4-1 win over Manchester United, Cesc Fabregas said: "I have some regrets over the last 10 minutes maybe." He had told his players to slow down. Nobody will need to ask him that this week. PSG and Barcelona are their last two league-phase fixtures.

Rico: And Erling Haaland reached 62 Champions League goals in 61 games, according to the competition's official X account. The post does not say which opponent he scored against, so the receipt is incomplete.

Kwame: Now to Old Trafford. Manchester United came from 2-0 down to beat Roma 3-2, equalling Real Madrid's record for overturning a two-goal deficit in the competition.

Shiv: Roma scored through Matias Soule and a Donyell Malen penalty. Then they stopped. Zero shots in the second half, according to the Mirror. Bruno Fernandes scored a retaken penalty after Devis Vasquez saved the first and the retake was ordered for encroachment. Matheus Cunha equalised after a Leonardo Balerdi error, scored the winner in the 86th minute, then was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow.

Kwame: The Mirror also reported a planned protest in the 21st minute, with green and gold balloons, a pie on the pitch and chants against the Glazers, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Jason Wilcox. Michael Carrick had said before kick-off: "I think tonight is a whole new Man United." One comeback is not a new club. Carlos Baleba also came off clutching his hamstring, and the report gives no diagnosis.

Rico: Diogo Dalot, playing out of position at left-back because Luke Shaw is injured, said the comeback showed the players care. His line: "Nights like this can change momentum, they can change seasons."

Kwame: The league table is the counter-argument. Seven points from nine games is United's worst start since 1987-88, and Aston Villa visit on Sunday. The Standard called the Roma win the end of a nine-game winless run; the Mirror called it their first win in ten matches. Either way, it was a long wait.

Rico: Now the poker hand. Real Madrid have offered 16-year-old JJ Gabriel a multi-year deal, according to the Guardian, hoping to bring him in January. United will consider legal action if they believe rules were broken, and the Guardian says the club have yet to be contacted by his camp or Madrid.

Kwame: The other story has David Ornstein reporting an expected January move: Gabriel is expected to sign long-term in January, subject to FIFA regulations. PSG, Barcelona and Bayern were also interested, he says. Gabriel walked out in September, and the Daily Mail says United refused to tear up his academy contract. Who pays, and under what rule, is still not answered.

Rico: Reports even disagree on whether he already holds an EU passport. The Guardian says he is eligible to acquire one. Football Insider and the Daily Mail say he has one.

Kwame: Elsewhere, Football Insider reports, citing unnamed sources, that Real Madrid have no intention of selling Trent Alexander-Arnold despite Liverpool links. He has four league starts this season and, the report says, wants to fight for his place.

Rico: Anonymous sources, a Liverpool link and an emphatic transfer denial. A classic.

Kwame: And BILD, via FourFourTwo, says Bayern Munich eye 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha as competition for Luis Diaz. Transfermarkt values him at €50 million. Nothing in the report points to a formal approach. Bayern balked at PSG's price for Bradley Barcola, and Liverpool signed him for £106 million plus £17 million in potential add-ons.

Shiv: Bayern are short on the left. Diaz, Serge Gnabry and Jamal Musiala are injured, and Alphonso Davies played left wing against Arsenal two weeks ago.

Kwame: We end with the most serious story of the day. Police are examining the medical response after Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, 30, died on Tuesday following Monday's 2-2 draw with FC Andorra. The National Police homicide unit is seeking to establish whether an involuntary manslaughter could have been committed.

Shiv: Reports say detectives are asking about oxygen, the defibrillator and the six-plus minutes on the pitch before a spinal board was used. Those questions are unanswered. The Mirror reports the chief prosecutor calls proceedings against goalkeeper Jesús Owono, who was sent off for kneeing De Miguel, very unlikely.

Kwame: The inquiry should take its time. Tenerife's players have lost a teammate; their supporters have lost one of their own. The facts will come out in their own order. That is our day.

Twelve stories and two of them are about the same 16-year-old. Madrid have an offer, United have a lawyer, and United, according to the Guardian, have heard from neither Madrid nor his camp.

Shiv Kearney

Nine goals at Lens, a 92nd-minute winner in Athens and fifteen defeats in sixteen away games against Barcelona for Emery. The numbers did the talking on Wednesday.
