Round table: Old Trafford protest, PSG record and Nuno sacked

Golden Era's Tuesday round table covers Man Utd v Roma, PSG's record, Nuno's sacking, Saliba's return, Kane's contract and the day's transfer rumours.

Kwame: Tuesday, 3 November: fourteen stories, and one Old Trafford night that tried to be three of them. Start with the build-up. The Stretford Enders planned to hand out 4,000 green and gold balloons, with the protest thought to be aimed at the Glazers and INEOS. A banner reading "No new stadium, we want new owners" was not going to be shown, according to The i, because UEFA did not sanction it in time.

Rico: The banner stayed out. The tennis balls came in. In the 21st minute the match was halted after fans threw tennis balls and other objects onto the pitch, the Daily Mirror reported. Some protests need paperwork. Others just need a pitch.

Shiv: Then the football. Roma led 2-0 inside 18 minutes, through Soule and a Malen penalty. United still won 3-2. The number: Roma did not take a single shot in the second half, per the Mirror. Fernandes scored a retaken penalty, Cunha equalised and then hit the winner in the 86th minute. He was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow. Whether that costs him a Champions League game is still an open question.

Kwame: The Standard counted nine games without a win. The Mirror called this United's first win in 10. Either way, the rot has ended on the pitch and not in the stands. The owners' ledger is a separate column.

Rico: Speaking of fast starts. PSG scored four in 16 minutes and two seconds, the fastest four in Champions League history according to MisterChip, and won 6-0 against Villarreal. Neves, Doue, Mayulu and Ruiz did the opening burst. Ruiz added another and Boly the sixth.

Shiv: Eighteen goals through four rounds. The previous best at this stage was 17, in 2017-18. Same night: Barcelona beat Aston Villa 3-0, and Bayern won 2-0 at Atletico Madrid. Kane did not score, missing the chance to match Ronaldo's run of scoring in 11 consecutive Champions League games.

Rico: He can console himself with paperwork. Kane says his Bayern extension is "a matter of days". Sky Sports, Eurosport and Florian Plettenberg all point to a deal until 2029. The salary is not in what has been reported.

Kwame: He collected the Ballon d'Or in London last week, the first Bundesliga winner in 30 years. Bayern are not so much negotiating as sending the invoice for the trophy.

Kwame: Less cheerful in east London. West Ham have sacked Nuno Espírito Santo 13 games into the Championship season, with the club eighth after back-to-back home defeats. Mark Noble, Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville take charge at Cardiff on Wednesday. The board says a change was needed to keep "the club's objectives and expectations" on track.

Shiv: Six wins from 13, six points behind Middlesbrough. That is the whole case.

Kwame: Follow the owner. Daniel Kretinsky became majority owner in September and, the Standard says, backed Nuno after relegation. The club also paid a Championship-record £22m for Arne Engels. Nuno had a three-year contract. The report gives no settlement figure. Asked about pressure, Nuno said: "I am always under pressure. Every day." He was right.

Shiv: Arsenal had better news. Saliba was back in first-team training at London Colney, after nearly five months out with a back injury. Konsa and Gabriel have four straight Premier League clean sheets. Arsenal are three points clear after the 1-0 at Liverpool. The cited training report does not confirm whether Saliba will travel for Slavia Prague. Saka was not spotted in training because of a thigh problem.

Rico: And the Evening Standard says Arsenal want Kroupi and Yildiz in January. Kroupi scored 13 goals in 35 appearances last season and has just returned from foot surgery. Yildiz has played once in Serie A this season, after foot surgery in August. It is a shopping list of players on the mend.

Kwame: Two rumours from Manchester. Florian Plettenberg says United want Rayan Aït-Nouri from City in January and that he is open to leaving. The Mirror says United tried on deadline day in September as cover for the injured Luke Shaw. He cost City an initial £31m and has made four appearances this season, none in the league. The Mirror identifies Owen Hargreaves in 2011 as the last senior player to move directly between the clubs.

Rico: And on Lisandro Martínez to Atlético Madrid, CaughtOffside claims he has an agreement in principle on personal terms. It is unconfirmed; his United contract ends in the summer.

Kwame: The Asian Cup 2027 has been postponed by 11 months, from a scheduled 7 January 2027 start to a new window of 23 December 2027 to 21 January 2028, after deadly attacks on Saudi Arabia. The Independent reports that the October strike at Riyadh's airport killed at least 12 people and wounded more than 300; the Daily Mail puts the death toll at 13. A schedule is the least of it.

Shiv: Two stories that sit outside the table. Stephen Warnock told BBC Radio 5 Live he hid seizures from Liverpool between the ages of 11 and 14. "I was petrified of telling Liverpool because I was worried of being released." He went on to make 67 appearances for the club.

Kwame: And we end with the hardest one. Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel has died at 30, at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, after a collision in Monday's Segunda División match against Andorra. That game was abandoned at 2-2 in stoppage time. He scored 11 goals in 29 games in Tenerife's promotion season. The club's statement began: "Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true." The report does not specify the medical cause of death.

Rico: Our thoughts are with his family, his team-mates and everyone at Tenerife.

Shiv: Agreed. That is the day.

Fourteen stories and half of them were about someone waiting on a signature, a verdict or a banner approval. Kane's extension is a matter of days away, which is not exactly a calendar invitation.

Shiv Kearney

Roma took zero second-half shots at Old Trafford, and West Ham took six wins from 13. Both numbers decided a manager's week.
