Grealish left out of Everton squad at Newcastle after discipline breach

Jack Grealish was left out of Everton's squad at Newcastle after a club discipline breach, his third missed game in a row, with a Coventry return unclear.

Jack Grealish is not in Everton's squad at Newcastle tonight, and the club says that is deliberate.

Everton confirmed before kick-off that the 31-year-old was left out for a "breach of club discipline", which the Standard says was not reporting for team training. It is his second omission since the breach and his third missed game in a row. He was absent from the 2-0 defeat at Arsenal on 24 October through illness, then dropped from last Thursday's Carabao Cup tie after missing training without permission. The Athletic reports he has not regained fitness since his last appearance on 17 October.

The record is thin. The Standard counts six appearances this season, the Daily Mail seven since he rejoined. The Standard reports no goal involvements since he returned on loan from Manchester City.

Everton went to St James' Park one point and two places behind Newcastle. Tyrique George and Tyler Dibling were selected on the flanks, with Thierno Barry leading the line and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the No10 role. Everton beat the same opponents 3-1 in the cup without him. Moyes said then: "it is a club decision and I support that decision."

He also said "we are not accepting any excuses". That sentence is doing a lot of work. Moyes has not said when Grealish will be considered again, and Ornstein reports it is unclear whether he returns against Coventry on Friday.

The team won without him and the stats offer him no defence. The numbers saw it first.

Meanwhile at the desk

Rico Valente

A British-record £100m signing, a City contract that runs to summer 2027, and he is currently on loan at a club winning cup ties without him. His next appearance remains unclear. The price tag offers no clues.

Kwame Asante

Moyes won't give details, the club talks about values, and two outlets can't even agree on how many games he has played. When the explanation is this thin, the questions get louder.
