Chelsea 2-0 Manchester United: Martinez's 83 seconds decide it

Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 on 31 October 2026. Rogers scored first, then two Martinez fouls in 83 seconds brought a red card and a Palmer penalty.

Eighty-three seconds. That is how long, according to BBC Sport, it took Lisandro Martinez to commit the two fouls that took Manchester United from a game they were still in to a game they had lost. Chelsea won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 31 October 2026.

Morgan Rogers scored in the 50th minute. Martinez was sent off in the 63rd. Cole Palmer converted the penalty in the 64th. United have now gone nine games without a win in all competitions (three draws, six defeats), per Opta figures in the Guardian.

The first half was United's

This is the awkward bit for Chelsea. The Guardian rated Chelsea's first half as appalling, and United had the better of it. Bruno Fernandes fired an early chance over, Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo missed good ones, and Matheus Cunha had a goal ruled out for offside. Mike Penders made two saves from Diallo. At half-time it was 0-0 and United had only their own finishing to blame.

Xabi Alonso had been without João Pedro, one of eight absentees before kick-off, so he used Pedro Neto as a nominal centre-forward in a 4-2-3-1. BBC Sport described Chelsea as lacking a recognised striker. The fix was Estêvão Willian, handed his first Premier League start of the season on the right.

The idea that decided it

Chelsea finished with 58.7% of the ball on Sky's count, but possession is not what broke the game open. A turnover did. Rogers' goal began when Mbeumo turned into trouble, Moisés Caicedo blocked him and Roméo Lavia nicked the ball past Carlos Baleba. Rogers then carried it through the middle, past five United players by the Guardian's count, and chipped Senne Lammens.

That is the tactical point. A strikerless front line gives opponents no reference point to mark, and the dangerous runner arrives from deep. United's two holders, Baleba and Andrey Santos, had no obvious man to pick up, and the Guardian had Lavia running the midfield from there. Estêvão kept the width alive, with six shots, 12 touches in the opposition box and five completed dribbles, per BBC Sport. He had two goals ruled out for offside, one of them marginal.

The number

Eighty-three seconds is the story, but the stats back it up. Sky's match data gives Chelsea 2.48 expected goals on target to United's 0.30, from nine shots on target against five. United's shots were not poor in volume (12 shots, 1.17 xG overall), they were poor in placement. Chelsea's 18 shots and 2.67 xG say the same thing from the other direction: once the game opened up, only one team was really testing the goalkeeper.

Palmer's penalty was also his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea, in his 105th appearance, per Opta in the Guardian, the third-fastest in the club's history behind Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Diego Costa.

The reaction

Michael Carrick, when asked about the dismissal, said: "The second goal and losing a man at that stage had a big influence on it, for sure." World Cup final official Darren Cann told BBC Sport that Martinez made no attempt to play the ball and was rightly sent off for two bookable offences. Martinez is suspended for United's home match against Aston Villa on Sunday 8 November, BBC Sport reports.

On Estêvão, Alonso said: "He has had the best response to show that he deserves more." That will matter, because the Guardian's piece earlier in the week pointed out that Chelsea are scoring well above what their chances deserve, and João Pedro's return is the obvious fix.

For now Chelsea are fourth with 16 points. United are 17th on seven, with Crystal Palace a place below on the same points and playing later on Saturday. Roma come to Old Trafford on Tuesday 3 November. Sky reports that Carrick expects to still be in charge for it. The Guardian thinks there is every chance he will not be.
