> On Cheeky Pint, Mark Zuckerberg said Meta considered a $100 billion to $200 billion AI commitment before knowing whether its new models would succeed.

A potential $100 billion to $200 billion check, before Meta had seen its new models. Fabulous nerve. Mark Zuckerberg told the Cheeky Pint podcast, released Monday, that Meta weighed exactly that in late 2025. "We haven't seen the models yet," he said, according to Business Insider, which notes he gave no timeframe or exact scope.

At an executive gathering in Hawaii, CFO Susan Li pulled Alexandr Wang aside "many times" to warn that failure would be "very, very bad in financial terms." Wang says he was "feeling good about it, but it was certainly not clear at all that it was going to work," and had little more than "a vibe report" on progress, the Times of India reported.

Now the numbers. Meta's guidance puts 2026 capital expenditures, including finance lease principal payments, at $130 billion to $145 billion, and Cantor Fitzgerald analysts expect $200 billion in 2027. Zuckerberg estimated that running one gigawatt of compute costs about $15 billion a year, with $50 billion to $60 billion upfront. Meta is building Prometheus in Ohio, beyond one gigawatt, and plans Hyperion in Louisiana at five.

The payoff so far: Muse Spark, Meta's first proprietary foundation model, drew a lukewarm developer response in April, according to the Times of India. The Muse agent app passed 2.8 million downloads in its first 12 days in the US and Canada, per Sensor Tower.

My take? Zuckerberg's defense is that for this to fail, "AI overall has to fail." Darling, that is not a hedge. That is a man betting on the whole industry, with a Hawaii view.
