> The week in review, October 26 to November 1: Arsenal's Anfield win, Kane's Ballon d'Or night, Barcelona's reset, Man United's winless run and the Howe rumours.

**Kwame:** Welcome to the week in review, October 26 to November 1. We published 47 stories, and the biggest was at Anfield. Arsenal beat Liverpool 1-0 on Sunday, ending a winless run at the ground that dates to September 2012, and moved top of the Premier League. The [Anfield win](https://goldenera.si/news/arsenal-beat-liverpool-anfield-havertz-top-of-premier-league/) came from Kai Havertz in the 16th minute.

**Shiv:** One mistake, one goal. Alisson Becker erred playing out from the back, Declan Rice crossed, Havertz finished at the far post. The [full match report](https://goldenera.si/news/arsenal-beat-liverpool-havertz-alisson-error/) is that simple. Liverpool then took 17 shots and, according to Sky Sports, none forced a save from David Raya. Seventeen shots, zero saves. That is volume without threat.

**Rico:** And the afterglow came with an argument. The Daily Mirror reports Jurrien Timber pulled Alexander Isak's shirt in the box in the 21st minute. Replays showed the pull, and neither Andy Madley nor VAR gave a penalty.

**Kwame:** The pundits split on it. Daniel Sturridge and Gary Neville said Isak needed to make more of the contact. Jamie Carragher and Ian Wright said the foul was clear and VAR should have acted anyway. Why VAR did not intervene is still unanswered in our reporting.

**Shiv:** Different kind of dominance at Tottenham. They beat 10-man Crystal Palace 2-0, with goals from Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke. Sky Sports says Spurs had 34 shots and 79.4 per cent possession. It was their [third straight league win](https://goldenera.si/news/tottenham-crystal-palace-2-0-three-straight-wins/), the first such run since February 2025. Jean-Philippe Mateta was sent off after a VAR review upgraded his yellow card to red.

**Kwame:** Then the other side of the title picture. Brighton won 1-0 at the Etihad through Yasin Ayari, their [first Premier League win at the ground](https://goldenera.si/news/brighton-beat-man-city-etihad-first-win/). It was back-to-back league defeats for Manchester City under Enzo Maresca, and the 13th goal they have conceded in their last six matches at home. Brighton went third, two points behind City at that point. Arsenal then went top on Sunday.

**Rico:** Which brings us to the club that had the worst week. Manchester United lost 2-0 at Chelsea, with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scoring in the second half. Chelsea went fourth. United's winless run in all competitions is now nine matches.

**Kwame:** The match itself belonged to Mike Penders, who stopped 12 shots deputising for the injured Emiliano Martínez. The [Chelsea story](https://goldenera.si/news/chelsea-man-united-penders-clean-sheet-alonso/) is the keeper's. United's story is the other one. Lisandro Martínez was sent off after two yellow cards in two minutes, and Sky adds that United have failed to win any of their first seven away matches in a season for the first time since 1973-74. Sky also calls the nine-match run their worst since September 1984, while The Guardian and CaughtOffside say since 1988. Pick your decade, none of them is flattering.

**Shiv:** Michael Carrick was asked by TNT Sports whether he expects to be in the dugout against Roma. He said: "Yeah." That is the whole quote, and it is [in our report](https://goldenera.si/news/carrick-man-united-roma-winless-run/). Short answer, long shadow.

**Kwame:** Now the managerial rumours. The Athletic reports an agreement to keep Carrick until the November international break, which covers Roma and Aston Villa. Spanish reports cited by Football365 say he could be sacked immediately. Two conflicting timelines, no club statement in either.

**Rico:** The successor board is just as crowded. Graeme Bailey and Jason Wilcox view Eddie Howe as the leading candidate, according to our reporting. Christopher Vivell prefers Julian Nagelsmann, and Spanish reports say Thomas Frank has overtaken both. TEAMtalk's reading of Fabrizio Romano's reporting is that Howe is not the dream target. BetFair has Howe at 4/6, Nagelsmann at 5/2 and Antonio Conte at 5/1. Our [Howe rumour piece](https://goldenera.si/news/eddie-howe-man-united-manager-rumour/) and the [successor rumour piece](https://goldenera.si/news/man-utd-carrick-successor-rumour/) have the detail.

**Kwame:** The money line is the one worth reading. Our [compensation report](https://goldenera.si/news/eddie-howe-manchester-united-compensation-newcastle/) says the payment Newcastle United want for Howe is understood to have started at £6m, has halved to £3m and is expected to expire before the end of the season. After that he could be appointed for nothing. That matters because the price of the idea is falling. The decision belongs to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co-chairs Joel and Avram Glazer, with Omar Berrada in the process. Whoever hires, someone else gets blamed.

**Rico:** And a gossip line on the squad side. United have reportedly enquired about Al-Ahli's 30-year-old striker Ivan Toney and ended their interest in Leeds forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin. That is in our [Toney piece](https://goldenera.si/news/man-utd-toney-enquiry-al-ahli-caught-offside/). Why they cooled on Calvert-Lewin is unknown.

**Shiv:** Barcelona had the opposite week. They ended two straight defeats with a 6-1 win over Alavés. Raphinha and Lamine Yamal scored twice each. Barcelona went top of La Liga on 30 points, two clear of Atlético Madrid. The [match report](https://goldenera.si/news/barcelona-alaves-6-1-raphinha-yamal/) also has Raphinha on 15 league goals in 11 games, a mark shared with César Rodríguez and Lionel Messi.

**Kwame:** Do not skip the setup. Brian Fariñas made his debut at right-back because of injuries, and Frenkie de Jong played at centre-back alongside Pau Cubarsí. Hansi Flick also reached 100 Barcelona wins in 131 games. The [milestone story](https://goldenera.si/news/flick-100-wins-barcelona-alaves/) has 100 wins, 10 draws and 21 defeats, a 76.33% win rate the club says is the highest of any manager it has had. Only Enrique, at 126 games, got there faster.

**Rico:** Milan fans had a good week too. AC Milan beat Inter 3-1 in the derby with all three goals before half-time. Christian Pulisic, Adrien Rabiot and Diego Moreira scored, and Moreira also had two assists. He called it his best night since joining and thanked his idol Kaká, who was at San Siro. Full story [here](https://goldenera.si/news/ac-milan-beat-inter-3-1-milan-derby/).

**Kwame:** Amorim said owner Gerry Cardinale has reminded him the objective remains the title. Owners always remind. Barella pointed to fevers for Pio and Bonny limiting Inter's bench options, but he also acknowledged individual errors led to Milan's open-play goals.

**Shiv:** Harry Kane got his Ballon d'Or at the Allianz Arena, then hit the crossbar with a penalty as Bayern drew 2-2 with Borussia Dortmund. Fabio Silva equalised in the 89th minute. The [Kane story](https://goldenera.si/news/harry-kane-ballon-dor-penalty-bayern-dortmund-draw/) says he scored 73 goals across the 2025-26 season for Bayern and England, and he is the first English winner since Michael Owen in 2001, according to the Daily Mail. The bar did not care about the trophy.

**Kwame:** One more selection story from Madrid. Jose Mourinho picked Fede Valverde over Trent Alexander-Arnold and Denzel Dumfries at right-back. Mourinho said: "Trent and Dumfries took it well when I explained that it was a decision for the team and not against the players." Alexander-Arnold has four starts in 13 matches and one assist. Real Madrid paid €10m (£8.33m) to sign him early from Liverpool, and his contract runs to 2031. The [full story](https://goldenera.si/news/alexander-arnold-valverde-mourinho-real-madrid/) asks who pays for a bench seat like that.

**Rico:** So what did the week add up to?

**Kwame:** Pressure moves to where the results are bad. Arsenal and Barcelona got what they wanted. United got a winless run, a sending-off and a managerial board with a falling price tag. The rest is who decides and who gets blamed.

**Shiv:** Coming up, watch United against Roma and Aston Villa. Watch whether Arsenal can follow Anfield with another clean sheet, and whether Manchester City stop conceding at the Etihad.

**Rico:** And watch the Howe numbers. If the odds move and the compensation keeps falling, the rumour pile gets taller. Until the club speaks, it is still a pile.

**Kwame:** Follow the money. It never takes a day off.
