# Utopai raises $60 million at a $1 billion valuation to make AI films

It operates as its own film studio, with more than 20 projects in the works, including two TV series and three feature films set for theaters next year. One is an animated adaptation of the children's book "The Most Serious Fart." The company aims to screen its films in about 3,000 North American theaters.

According to Dealroom, rather than train frontier models like Kling, Runway and Luma, Utopai draws on models from several providers. It customized the open-source MiniMax H3 to build its own video model, which ranks second on an Artificial Analysis text-to-video leaderboard. Shen says AI tools cut the cost of planning scenes and CGI by 80% to 90%, though the company still pays directors and actors and raises separate financing for each project.

The neighbors are rich. Dealroom also reports that Higgsfield quadrupled its valuation to $5.4 billion in August, and Kling AI raised nearly $3 billion at a $15 billion valuation over the summer. Utopai already holds term sheets for a follow-on round at $2 billion to $3 billion, which reflects investor interest, not a completed deal.
