> Toyota plans 400,000 robots under a $6.4 billion annual investment, the FT reports, as it takes on Tesla, Xpeng and Hyundai in humanoid robots.

Toyota wants to turn itself into a global robotics company, and it is betting on humanoid robots and factory automation to get there. The world's largest automaker plans to deploy 400,000 robots as part of a $6.4 billion annual investment plan, the Financial Times reports. The push comes after two decades of research.

The competition is already lined up: Tesla, Xpeng and Hyundai, which plans to start building its Atlas robot in the US in 2028. Goldman Sachs analysts think Toyota could grab 3 to 8 percent of the humanoid robot market by 2035. The Decoder reports that in July, Toyota's AI robotics spinout Walden Robotics went public with a $1.1 billion valuation and $300 million in funding.

The robots go to work in Toyota's own factories first. A Toyota executive says the environment there is easier to control, according to The Decoder. Investors are more cautious, pointing to earlier Toyota misses on hydrogen cars and solid-state batteries.

What the coverage leaves out is the useful part: no split between humanoids and plain factory automation inside that $6.4 billion.

My take: big budget, no robot model in the coverage, no deployment timeline. Call me when there is a repo, or at least a spec sheet.
