> Amazon's TorchNeuron public beta lets existing PyTorch code run on Trainium2 and Trainium3 chips with one config change, aimed squarely at Nvidia's CUDA moat.

Amazon announced Monday that TorchNeuron, its PyTorch backend for Trainium2 and Trainium3 chips, is open to all developers as a public beta. It has been in private beta since late last year. Amazon says existing PyTorch code runs with a single configuration change and no rewrite: point it at the chip with `.to('neuron')`. The code is scheduled to be open-sourced under Apache 2.0 at PyTorch Conference North America on October 20, at github.com/aws-neuron/torch-neuronx.

Amazon says 85% of AI researchers and developers write in PyTorch. Colin Brace, vice president of software for Annapurna Labs, said more than 30 early customers across robotics, world models and voice AI are using it. Brace says Deepgram now runs Trainium in production. Deepgram reports about 60% more input audio seconds per dollar than its existing GPU baselines. That is one company and one workload. The announcement gives no wider benchmark against Nvidia GPUs.

In an August 2026 run of the upstream PyTorch suite, about 154K outcomes included roughly 69K skips. About 22K test outcomes were skipped because the operators involved lacked native Neuron lowering; Amazon plans to address those coverage gaps in later releases.

The context: Nvidia's lead rests on CUDA, and Google is also courting developers with better PyTorch tooling for its own chips.

My take: the moat was never just silicon, it was the setup step. Amazon cut it to one line. Check your operators before you move anything.
