> A Texas study from HARC warns data center power demand could lift nitrogen oxide emissions 136% by 2031, undoing most of two decades of air-quality gains.

Texas spent two decades scrubbing its air, and a new study from the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) says the data center boom could undo much of it by 2031. The Texas Tribune covered the report on October 20.

In a scenario where all new data center demand is met by the projected grid mix, HARC finds 2031 NOx would rise 136% and approach its 2004 volume. VOCs would top 2002 levels by 32%, PM2.5 would climb back to its 2006 volume, and SO2 would rise 18% but stay below its 2002 level.

The real drama is the power supply. HARC says NOx from data center generation could run 2 to 10 times higher if new demand is met with combustion instead of grid supply paired with solar and wind. Even in a cleaner "net zero" scenario, the Tribune reports, statewide NOx could rise 35%. With traditional on-site natural gas, it could climb nearly 400%.

Context: HARC's figures show Texas power generation cut NOx 67% between 2002 and 2024. Meanwhile, the Tribune reports that ERCOT received more than 500 requests to connect large electricity users in two years, versus roughly two dozen the year before, and that Gov. Greg Abbott has temporarily halted new data centers from connecting to the grid pending an audit.

My take: gorgeous, enormous, terrifying numbers, and the study's own message is that the power-supply choice decides the outcome. The room is full of people with the power to choose.
