Stripe says purchases made by AI agents through its Link wallet rose 38-fold in September. Payment volume grew 20-fold, retail led both measures, and the average spend was about $100.

Stripe published its Link update on September 29, and Upstarts Media reported the September numbers on October 18. Link now supports incremental authorization, so an agent can ask for a higher approved amount when taxes or shipping push the final price past the estimate. It also hands the user a URL for 3D Secure challenges. Muse is the first agent to offer Link's purchase protections. Spending controls, which would let you set a budget without approving every transaction, are planned with no date attached.

Agents on Link include Muse, Meta's new personal agent, Grok Bot and Instinct. Anthropic and OpenAI use Link, but not for agentic commerce yet, according to Upstarts. Stripe's Dan Hill told the outlet: “The volume we’re seeing now is becoming very material.”

Context, according to Upstarts Media: Link has 300 million users overall, so agents are still a small slice. Stripe crunched September when about 70 agents were signed on. Link now powers about 200.

My take: a multiplier without a dollar total is doing a lot of work. Stripe also gives no category beyond retail. But a $100 average means real cards buying real things. I'd wait for the budget caps before handing an agent my wallet.
