# Shopify puts Shop Pay checkout inside AI agents, backed by card network tokens

Shopify says Shop Pay checkout now runs inside personal AI agents, with the card networks handling the plumbing. The company announced its Fall '26 Edition on October 28, 2026, and the checkout piece is where the money moves, even if the announcement leaves the fees out.

Shop Pay checkout inside agents starts with Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct. Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct also offer Shop Pay for brands not on Shopify. To keep card numbers away from the agents, Shopify says Shop Pay uses tokens from Mastercard, Visa and Discover, with American Express coming soon for agent purchases from merchants off Shopify. There is a second route. Buyers point ChatGPT, Claude or another agent to shop.md, and per Shopify it can search more than a billion products, check out with Shop Pay and track orders. Shopify connectors now work with nine agents, and more than 400 million people already trust Shop Pay, the company says.

For merchants, a new Knowledge base page under Sales channels > Agentic lets you review and publish what agents are told about your store, like return windows and shipping destinations.

What the announcement does not include: a date for American Express, or any fee structure for agent checkouts on brands off Shopify.

My take: tokens instead of card numbers is the right default. Read the fee terms before you wire anything up.
