> Samsung Electronics says Q3 operating profit will hit 107.4 trillion won, about $80 billion, a world first for a tech company, on AI memory demand.

Samsung Electronics says its operating profit for the three months ending September will reach 107.4 trillion won, about $80 billion, its fourth straight record quarter. According to CNA, that tops 100 trillion won, a world first for a technology company, and it comes as booming demand for AI chips drives memory sales.

Samsung issued the preliminary figure Thursday in a regulatory filing. Let us take a moment to admire it.

## The numbers, in all their glory

The BBC, CNA and Nikkei Asia all describe the jump as nearly nine-fold from a year earlier. Bloomberg puts the increase at 782%. Free Malaysia Today says more than eight times. Pick your superlative; none of them is small.

Revenue is expected to climb 127% to 195 trillion won, which Bloomberg converts to roughly $145.7 billion. And the profit estimate alone is more than twice what Samsung earned in all of 2025.

Now, the fine print, because even a triumph has fine print. Outlets disagree on whether this beat the street. CNA says it came in slightly ahead of an LSEG SmartEstimate of 106.1 trillion won. Free Malaysia Today and Bloomberg say it fell short of the 108.7 trillion won analysts had forecast on average, and that revenue also came in lower than expected. Bloomberg puts operating profit at about $80.1 billion against roughly $81.2 billion expected. A miss of that size on a profit that large is the kind of problem every executive in the world would like to have.

Yuanta Securities analyst Lee Jae-won put it this way: "There were uncertainties surrounding Samsung's earnings as analysts cut their estimates, but the results turned out to be better than expected."

Currency conversions also vary by outlet. The BBC gives $80 billion for the profit. CNA converts the 100 trillion won threshold to US$74 billion. Same won, different day.

## Why memory is printing money

The engine is the data-center buildout. The BBC notes that US tech giants including Google, Amazon and Meta have pledged more than $650 billion toward AI projects this year. The BBC says surging demand has produced a global semiconductor shortage, helping lift Samsung's sales; its stock market valuation crossed $1 trillion earlier in 2026.

Prices are doing the heavy lifting. Counterpoint Research raised its third-quarter DRAM price forecast to a 10% to 20% sequential increase, from 5% to 10%, citing customers pulling forward orders and suppliers gaining pricing power. Douglas Kim of Douglas Research Advisory estimates Samsung's high-bandwidth memory (HBM) bit shipments grew close to 50% quarter over quarter.

South Korea's trade data tells the same story: semiconductor exports more than tripled from a year earlier in September, according to Free Malaysia Today. The BBC reports that in June, the country unveiled plans for at least $880 billion in projects led by Samsung and SK Hynix to build out chip manufacturing.

The workforce is invited to the party, too. Nikkei Asia reports Samsung agreed with its memory chip workers union to set aside 10.5% of the unit's operating profit for an employee bonus.

## Not every room is gilded

This is a memory story, not a whole-company story. Analysts, per Free Malaysia Today, expect the chip division to post an operating profit of 110 trillion won while the electronics unit reports a loss. CNA says analysts expect the contract chipmaking foundry business to stay loss-making because of fixed costs and low utilization.

Samsung's divisional breakdown is not in the preliminary filing. That is the point of the detailed results due October 29.

## What to watch

The longer view is rosy, with caveats. According to CNA, Samsung and Micron expect the supply and demand imbalance to persist into 2028, though rising costs, Chinese competition and potential US semiconductor tariffs pose risks to longer-term earnings. Whether tariffs arrive, and what they would cost Samsung, is an open question.

Two more items for the calendar:

- **October 29:** detailed results with the division-by-division breakdown. Yuanta's Lee says investors will be watching shareholder return policies, and what Samsung announces there is not yet known.
- **AMD:** CEO Lisa Su said Wednesday that AMD continues to explore partnership opportunities with Samsung in memory and foundry. CNA's report gives no specific partnership terms.

A hundred trillion won in a single quarter. Whatever the consensus said, the number on the page is the number on the page, and it belongs in the record books.
