> Radical Numerics says AI-designed phages were given to one patient under compassionate use. It is withholding the outcome, and the report is not peer-reviewed.

Radical Numerics says phages designed by its Omnii-1 genome language model were given to a human patient under compassionate use for an antibiotic-resistant infection, the world's first clinical use of AI-generated phages, in the company's words. In lab tests, it says, the cocktail containing Omnii-1 designs eliminated the patient's resistant isolate in vitro.

The part that matters most is missing. The company is not disclosing the patient's clinical course or outcome, citing privacy. So a patient received the treatment, and we do not know whether it helped. The company itself says one patient cannot establish safety or efficacy, and the therapies are not approved for broader use.

The published numbers come from the bench. On gp17, the tail fiber protein of the T7 E. coli phage, 69.9% of designed variants with 11 to 15 amino acid changes were recovered, against 4.8% of random controls. Of 6,694 variants with measurable activity, 2,161 beat wild type, some with up to 28 changes. A real result, if it holds.

The technical report sits on the company's website and has not been peer-reviewed, O Globo reported. CEO Eric Nguyen told the paper the company intends to publish in peer-reviewed research. O Globo also says company representatives called it an FDA-authorized clinical trial, while the company's own post says compassionate use. Different things.

My take: strong wet-lab statistics, then a sample of one with the result redacted. Show me the eval, not the vibe.
