> Mathematicians say OpenAI's 166-page Navier-Stokes proof doesn't follow the method the lab claimed, while Sam Altman teases its last line of reasoning.

OpenAI's Navier-Stokes proof has a method problem. In early September the company presented a 166-page potential solution and claimed it followed the approach of Spanish mathematicians Diego Córdoba and Luis Martínez-Zoroa. Scientific American reports that several groups of experts now disagree. "When you go to the details, it is a different approach," says Gonzalo Cao-Labora of EPFL, who calls the similarities surface-level.

The proof is written in Lean, which checks every logical step but is not readable to humans on its own. The Clay Mathematics Institute has been reviewing it since release, and the reporting I have gives no verdict.

The effort used about 10,000 model instances for roughly 88 hours and 130 billion tokens. OpenAI researcher Noam Brown says nobody knows what that swarm contributed, and he puts less than 10 percent of the success down to the multi-agent setup. Meanwhile, according to The Decoder, roughly 400 more results landed on GitHub in early October, angering mathematicians who felt it cheapened their field.

Sam Altman posted on X that the back of the Navier-Stokes milestone shirt carries "the last line of the chain-of-thought from the solution." The line itself does not appear in the post's text.

My take: a shirt is merch, not a method section. Experts are disputing which method was used, and the swarm's contribution is unmeasured. Show me the eval, not the vibe.
