The Financial Times reports, citing sources, that OpenAI now seeks about $20 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation for its latest round, down from $30 billion at $1.4 trillion, as some investors cut commitments during an AI selloff. The reporting includes no statement from OpenAI confirming or denying any of it.

## What is reported

The FT's headline reads "OpenAI slashes funding target by $10bn as tech anxieties mount." The Information ran a briefing headlined "OpenAI Lowers Fundraising Target–After Decreasing Possible Valuation." Two outlets, one direction of travel. Still reporting, not an announcement.

The Wall Street Journal's Berber Jin adds a different shade, per Techmeme's summary: OpenAI has secured about $11 billion in commitments, less than half of the original $30 billion target, and expects to raise more in the coming weeks. A Hacker News submission linked a WSJ piece titled "OpenAI raises less than half of $30B target."

Note the framing gap. The FT says the target fell. The WSJ says the round is still being filled, at the lower valuation. Those are compatible, but they are not the same story.

## The part with no source

The account @zerohedge posted the FT news under "House of cards now falling apart" and added: "Abu Dhabi passed on $30BN." That is commentary. Neither the FT summary nor the WSJ summary, as quoted here, names an investor. And $30 billion was the size of the whole original target, so one backer passing on all of it would be a strange reading of the numbers.

## What is not known

- Which investors cut their commitments.
- Whether Abu Dhabi or any Gulf fund formally declined to take part.
- When the rest of the round is expected to close beyond the roughly $11 billion reportedly secured.
- What data on the "AI selloff" and "tech anxieties" drove the change.

The arithmetic is simple: $10 billion off the target, $150 billion off the valuation. Whether that is a retreat or a haircut on the way to a close is the question the reporting does not answer.

A smaller target is not a closed round. Show me the close.
