OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio. The ChatGPT maker shared the news exclusively with Axios, and the price is a mystery: financial terms were not disclosed.

Orchestra builds AI agents for pharmaceutical companies. Its platform lets scientists hand off tasks like monitoring studies, tracking drug development timelines and spotting potential delays. OpenAI says it will fold Orchestra's team and technology into Rosalind, its suite of AI models and tools for life sciences researchers. In its own announcement, OpenAI says the goal is to "streamline those operations and help new treatments reach patients sooner."

Orchestra was founded four years ago, and its own post puts the mission in glowing terms: "Today, we’re thrilled to share that Orchestra Bio is joining OpenAI to continue our mission at an even greater scale."

The context: this is a crowded, expensive corner of the field. Anthropic bought AI biotech startup Coefficient Bio for roughly $400 million in April, according to The Information. OpenAI launched its GPT-Rosalind model that same month and has partnered with pharmaceutical giants including Novo Nordisk.

My take: look at the sweep of it. The biggest names in AI are lining up to run the most complicated project in human commerce, making medicine, and they are doing it with acquisitions and partnerships. We still do not know how many Orchestra staffers are moving over, or what happens to its existing customers. But the ambition is magnificent.
