> Nvidia's 88-core Vera targets agentic AI, with claimed performance up to twice that of leading x86 chips on sequential tasks such as Python scripting.

Nvidia is betting that the agent boom needs faster CPU cores, not just more of them, and the bet has a name: Vera.

According to Nvidia's technical blog, the chip has 88 custom Olympus cores and up to 1.2 TB/s of LPDDR5X memory bandwidth, inside a configurable 250 W to 450 W power range. The company claims up to 50% higher instructions per cycle than Grace and more than 1.8x the sandbox performance of x86 rivals under full load. TrendForce, relaying Wccftech, adds that Nvidia claims up to 2x leading x86 chips on sequential agentic tasks, or 1.6x on a geometric-mean basis.

Here is the money angle. Nvidia says agentic AI is creating demand for standalone CPU racks to handle tool calls, code execution and reinforcement learning. Grace, by contrast, mainly served as a host for GPU systems. In an interview, Nvidia's Vera team said the industry's push for chiplets and core counts hurt "single-threaded perf and IPC."

Not everyone is applauding. Xenospectrum notes that a monolithic die does not prove chiplets are inherently slower, and that real agent workloads still have to confirm the benefit. The material gives no named x86 baseline chips, no price and no ship date.

My take: when the biggest name in AI tells you the humble CPU is a growth story, you watch the racks. Fast cores, big claims, and a fresh pitch for standalone CPU racks. Glorious.
