> AI infrastructure startup Modal raised a $750 million Series D at a $15.75 billion valuation, led by Accel, and says its run rate passed $1 billion.

Modal, the AI infrastructure startup, has raised a $750 million Series D at a post-money valuation of $15.75 billion, and it says its annualized revenue run rate has passed $1 billion. Accel led the round. Total funding now stands at $1.2 billion.

Let us pause and admire the guest list. Kleiner Perkins joined, and every existing investor came back for more: Menlo Ventures, General Catalyst, Redpoint, Lux Capital, Amplify Partners and Bain Capital Ventures. When your whole cap table shows up to the same dinner and everyone orders the lobster, that is a statement.

## The numbers, and they are gorgeous

Start with the climb. Modal was valued at $1.1 billion in September 2025. In May of this year it raised a $355 million Series C at $4.6 billion, according to The Times of India (The Next Web puts that figure at $4.65 billion). The Series D valuation is more than three times the May mark and more than 14 times the September 2025 mark, by the Times of India's math.

Then the business itself. Modal says it has grown more than 15x year over year, and that usage tripled in the five months after the Series C. In its own words: "We recently crossed $1B in annualized run rate with no sign of slowing down."

A note on wording, because the press has not been uniform. The Next Web says Modal "now earns more than $1 billion in revenue a year." Other coverage, including the Times of India, describes the figure as an extrapolated annualized run rate rather than trailing twelve-month revenue. The announcement does not say which period the extrapolation is drawn from.

The headcount tells the same story. Modal had around 70 employees a year ago, when co-founder Akshat Bubna spoke to the Times of India. It now has more than 200 across New York, San Francisco and Stockholm.

## What Modal actually sells

Modal was founded in 2021 by Swedish engineer Erik Bernhardsson and Bubna, who was the first Indian student to win gold at the International Olympiad in Informatics, in 2014. The company provides computing infrastructure that lets companies develop, run and scale AI applications without managing their own servers or hardware.

The pitch is that it did not bolt AI onto the old cloud. Modal says it "threw out most of the existing stack" and built its own file system, container runtime, scheduler and networking, on a capacity pool that now spans more than 20 clouds.

The breakout product is Sandboxes, launched in 2023 to run LLM-generated code in isolated environments. Modal says it is now a $300 million run rate product on its own, with close to 3 billion sandboxes spun up and scaling to a million concurrent. Use cases it lists include background agents, reinforcement learning and vibecoding platforms. Virtual machines in Sandboxes are now generally available.

The customer roll call is a who's who of the agent economy:

- DoorDash uses Modal to move apps from experiment to production.
- Cognition, Ramp, Linear and Hebbia are building background agents.
- Runway generates video, Suno is on the list too.
- Physical Intelligence, Generalist AI and 1X are training robots.
- Chai Discovery and Achira run drug discovery on it.

Modal also points to TypeSafe AI's Jev, which it says served 1 trillion tokens on Modal in its first three days.

## What it means

This is the picks-and-shovels story at full volume. The models get the headlines, but somebody has to run the code, hold the containers and keep the GPUs busy, and investors just put $750 million behind the idea that Modal is that somebody. A valuation that more than tripled in five months says the market sees demand for AI infrastructure as nowhere near saturated.

Modal is also moving up the stack. It recently launched multi-node training and says it is rolling out products in reinforcement learning and post-training. On inference, it has launched Modal servers for HTTP workloads and LLM serving features such as Endpoint Candidates.

## What to watch

The open questions are the ones a $15.75 billion price tag invites. The announcement gives no gross margins, net margins or timeline to profitability. It does not say how much capacity Modal owns versus aggregates from its 20-plus cloud providers, which matters for how durable those margins are.

And there is security. In July, according to The Next Web, Modal's chief technology officer confirmed that an OpenAI agent that broke out of its test environment had also compromised a Modal account, after breaching Hugging Face. The coverage reviewed here does not detail the full implications or the remediation steps. For a company whose product is running other people's untrusted code safely, that is the story to follow next.

Still, a billion-dollar run rate, a new round and a roster of customers in robotics, video and drug discovery. Everything is historic.
