> Microsoft says its 2.8T-parameter MAI-Base-2 beats tested open-weight rivals and is 4 to 12 times more pretraining-FLOPs-efficient than DeepSeek-V4-Pro-Base.

Microsoft says it has completed pretraining MAI-Base-2, a mixture-of-experts foundation model with 80 billion active and 2.8 trillion total parameters. The company claims it outperforms every open-weight model it tested on held-out evaluations, while being 4 to 12 times more pretraining-FLOPs-efficient than DeepSeek-V4-Pro-Base.

That is the press-release version. The interesting part is what the claim is built from, and what it is not.

## What Microsoft actually announced

Yahoo Finance reports that MAI-Base-2 was trained on 16,000 Nvidia GB200 GPUs over 38 days in August and September 2026, using roughly 50 trillion tokens. TokenPost adds that vision-language data made up 18% of the mixture, which is 9 trillion tokens, drawn from 4.5 trillion unique tokens. The knowledge cutoff is March 2026.

This is a base model. In June, Microsoft announced MAI-Thinking-1, which was post-trained on top of MAI-Base-1. Nothing in the reporting says when post-training for MAI-Base-2 ends, or when anyone outside Microsoft can use it.

The company says it trained on original data rather than distilling from other AI systems, a distinction it considers important for licensing the weights to trusted partners through Azure AI Foundry. The reporting gives no pricing, partner list or dates for that access.

## The numbers, and the footnote

The headline efficiency figure is 4.2 to 12.3 times more pretraining-FLOPs-efficient than DeepSeek-V4-Pro-Base, which Microsoft calls "the strongest open base model." It also says it "put that saving into training a larger model." That is a broad range for a headline claim, and the quoted explanation does not establish what accounts for the spread.

The quality comparison rests on held-out bits per byte, where lower is better, across internal code, QA, Math and STEM evaluation sets. Two words there deserve attention: internal and held-out. Held-out is good practice. Internal means Microsoft's own sets, and the cited reporting provides no independent reproduction of those results. This is not a tax-preparation scorecard.

Then there is the footnote under Figure 1: MiMo-V2.6-Pro-RL, Qwen3.8-2.4T-A95B and Kimi K3 are post-trained models. TokenPost notes that Microsoft compared against those post-trained checkpoints because base versions were unavailable, and that the mismatch could influence the results. A base model measured against post-trained rivals is not an apples-to-apples contest. It might favor Microsoft or it might not. The announcement as quoted does not say which.

And "every open-weight model we tested" is a sentence that depends entirely on the testing.

The cleanest comparison is Microsoft against Microsoft. TokenPost reports that MAI-Base-1 had 35 billion active and 1 trillion total parameters, and used 8,192 GB200 GPUs on 30 trillion pretraining tokens plus 3.55 trillion mid-training tokens. The new model has more than twice the active parameters and 2.8 times the total. Yahoo Finance reports its unique token dataset grew about 36%, and that Microsoft says its recipe is 6.3 to 12.7 times more compute-efficient than MAI-Base-1.

That is a self-reported improvement over an earlier internal baseline. Useful context, not independent validation.

## The OpenAI sidebar

Publicly, Microsoft framed MAI-Base-2 against open-weight models. Privately, according to Business Insider, Mustafa Suleyman went further. At a Thursday town hall, the Microsoft AI CEO told employees: "We now have a stronger pre-trained base model than the model that currently powers GPT 5.6 Sol." He added: "And in fact, we used one-quarter of the compute that OpenAI used to train their model."

Business Insider reports that Suleyman said Microsoft privately tested the model against OpenAI models, including one nicknamed "Spud" that powers GPT-5.6, and that Microsoft's model did better on tests of how well AI predicts patterns in information. No methodology for those private tests is in what has been reported. It is an internal claim to staff, not a published result.

Context helps. Business Insider notes that Microsoft has invested billions in OpenAI and owns a stake likely worth more than $100 billion. It also notes that in March, Microsoft created a combined Copilot team for commercial and consumer products and reassigned Suleyman to build models in what the outlet calls the company's Super Intelligence unit. Building a base model that you say beats your partner's is a funny way to spend a reorg.

## What to watch

- **Post-training.** A base model is raw material. Watch for post-training results, and a timetable for access.
- **Release terms.** The reporting gives no pricing, partner list or dates for Azure AI Foundry access.
- **Independent evals.** Anyone outside Microsoft who can compare on shared benchmarks, ideally against base checkpoints.
- **MAI-Base-3.** Microsoft says preparations are already underway.

The claim may well hold. A company that finishes a 2.8-trillion-parameter run in 38 days has clearly built something. But the results presented here come from Microsoft's own tests, on Microsoft's own sets, with a footnote. Show me the eval, not the vibe.
