> Microsoft-Decision-1 is a 9B decision-scoring model built on Alibaba's Qwen3.5, priced at $0.042 per million input tokens. Performance figures come from Microsoft's own tests.

Microsoft introduced Microsoft-Decision-1 on October 9, a model that scores predefined answer options instead of writing open-ended text. Microsoft post-trained Alibaba's open-weight Qwen3.5-9B to build it, and it runs in Microsoft Foundry and through OpenRouter.

In Microsoft's 36-benchmark comparison, covering nearly 150,000 blind questions, Decision-1 posted the highest accuracy at 83.5%, according to The Register. Microsoft says it was 2.5 times faster than the runner-up, H2O-Lightning-4B v1.1, and 35 times faster than GPT-6 Sol. Input tokens cost $0.042 per million, and output tokens are free.

The fine print: text only, a 32,000-token context window, no explanations. The model card says it should not be the sole basis for consequential decisions about people, such as credit or employment. Weights are not distributed, so access is hosted API only. Microsoft also says it will soon rebase the model onto other models, including its own MAI and OpenAI's. The post does not say why.

Context: it arrived the same day TypeSafe, maker of the rival Jev, announced an $870 million Series A at a $7.5 billion valuation, The New Stack reported.

My take: Decision-1's performance numbers here are Microsoft's own report card. A USC preprint flipped 312 of Jev's 508 correct decisions with natural-sounding context changes. It did not test Decision-1, so that question is still open, and an unasked question is not a passing grade.
