> Microsoft Cloud hit $63.9 billion, up 30%, as Azure grew 48% and Microsoft disclosed Azure revenue in dollars for the first time: $33.16 billion.

Microsoft said on October 28, 2026 that Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $63.9 billion in the quarter ended September 30, up 30%, with Azure revenue up 48%. For the first time, the company also put a dollar figure on Azure itself: $33.16 billion, according to MarketWatch (Bloomberg rounds it to $33.2 billion).

A cloud empire, finally showing its receipts.

## The quarter, in numbers

Analysts were looking for 44% Azure growth and 17% total revenue growth. Microsoft delivered 48% and 19%. Total revenue came in at $92.3 billion. Operating income reached $45.9 billion, up 21%.

GAAP net income was $36.6 billion, up 32%, with diluted EPS of $4.92. The non-GAAP figures, which exclude the net impact of OpenAI investments, are more modest: $36.4 billion in net income, up 18%, and EPS of $4.89. The gap is the OpenAI line. Microsoft says net gains from those investments added $207 million and $0.03 per share this quarter, against net losses of $3.1 billion and $0.41 per share in the same quarter a year earlier.

The new Azure disclosure matters. At $33.16 billion, Azure is a little over half of the $63.9 billion Microsoft Cloud figure. What it does not tell us is the mix: how much of that is AI infrastructure and how much is traditional cloud services. That question is still open.

## The backlog and the bill

Commercial remaining performance obligation rose 73% to $677 billion. That is contracted business waiting to be delivered. Set that backlog beside the spending bill.

Capital expenditure was $45.2 billion in the September quarter. CFO Amy Hood said spending is expected to exceed $50 billion in the December quarter, with calendar year 2026 capex projected at approximately $170 billion, partly reflecting capacity deliveries delayed from earlier periods, according to BusinessLine. Hood also said customer demand continues to exceed available supply. In other words, the customers are lining up faster than Microsoft can add capacity.

The guidance keeps the pedal down. Microsoft expects December quarter revenue of $96 billion to $97.1 billion, growth of 18% to 19%, with Azure growth of 49% to 50% in constant currency. The company also returned $10.2 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks this quarter. Generosity at this altitude is a lovely thing.

## Copilot, agents and the platform scoreboard

Satya Nadella's post on LinkedIn supplied the product scoreboard. Copilot daily users grew nearly 50% quarter over quarter and more than 5X year over year. The number of customers with more than 50,000 Copilot seats is up 8X year over year. GitHub Copilot got Copilot Fusion, announced the morning of October 28, which the post says delivers "frontier level quality, at up to 77% lower cost."

The rest of the platform is moving just as fast, by the company's own count:

- Foundry revenue more than tripled year over year.
- Customers building with multiple models grew 5X year over year.
- Revenue from open source models increased 10X year over year.
- Nearly 60,000 customers are accessing context through Microsoft IQ, up 25% quarter over quarter.
- More than 50 million agents are now in A365, up 30% quarter over quarter.

The post also says Windows and Agent 365 are being brought together so agents can work within secure boundaries on the device using MXC, and that agents like OpenAI Codex, Anthropic Claude Code and Meta Muse are adopting it. Rivals, lined up on Microsoft's platform. I adore a crowded room.

By segment, Agents and Infra revenue was $76.8 billion, up 25%. Search and advertising revenue excluding traffic acquisition costs rose 12%. Microsoft 365 commercial cloud revenue rose 17% as reported.

Not everything glittered. Devices and Consumer revenue fell 3% to $15.5 billion, with Windows OEM and Devices down 22% and Xbox content and services down 2%. The release does not say what drove the Windows OEM drop.

## What to watch

Three things. First, the December quarter: Microsoft has put Azure growth at 49% to 50% in constant currency, so the bar is now set by the company itself. Second, capex: more than $50 billion next quarter and roughly $170 billion for calendar 2026 is an enormous commitment, and the delayed deliveries behind part of it have not been itemized. Third, the Azure dollar line: now that Microsoft has started disclosing it, every quarter will be measured against $33.16 billion.

One more open item. The $33.16 billion figure appears in news coverage, and the main press release tables the desk reviewed do not break it out separately. Expect analysts to ask for more detail on the AI versus traditional split.

For now, the message from Redmond is plain: demand exceeds supply, the backlog is $677 billion, and the checks are very large.
