Bloomberg reported on October 28, citing people familiar with the matter, that Marvell Technology is in advanced talks to buy Lumentum Holdings, a data center optics maker. Neither company immediately responded to Reuters' requests for comment.

## The math people are already doing

Bloomberg puts Lumentum's market value at about $83 billion and Marvell's at about $221 billion. Reuters, via Boursorama, says Marvell held roughly $3.92 billion in cash and equivalents at the end of its latest quarter. Bernstein analysts said a deal of this size would probably need additional financing and could bring integration challenges.

There is a plausible backdrop. Reuters says Marvell's stock has nearly tripled this year on demand for custom AI chips and networking products. Earlier this month Marvell raised its fiscal 2028 revenue target from $15 billion to $20 billion. It also bought photonics firm Celestial AI in a $3.25 billion deal announced late last year.

Another wrinkle: Lumentum took a $2 billion investment from Nvidia earlier this year. The reports do not explain what a Marvell deal would mean for that relationship.

Reports of the extended-hours market reaction delivered three different scoreboards. Reuters reported Lumentum up about 9% and Marvell down over 8%. Investing.com said more than 9% and over 7%. Seeking Alpha said 15% and 11%.
