> Manchester United are reportedly weighing a Michael Carrick successor after the Chelsea loss, but reports disagree on timing. Nothing is confirmed.

Fabrizio Romano, via Football365 and TEAMtalk, says Manchester United have a leading target to replace Michael Carrick, while other reports say the manager's sacking is close. The accounts include no statement from United or INEOS, so all of it remains unconfirmed.

## What is behind the noise

United lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, stretching their winless run to nine matches in all competitions. That followed a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.

TEAMtalk's version of the Romano report is blunter on one point: Eddie Howe is not the dream target if Carrick goes. TEAMtalk's version of the Romano report is blunter on one point: Eddie Howe is not the dream target if Carrick goes. Football365 also cites reports that United have identified their top two targets, with INEOS 'convinced' by a replacement.

## Where the stories split

The timing is the problem. The Athletic, as relayed by The Standard, reports that crisis talks last week after the Como and Bournemouth defeats produced an agreement to keep Carrick until the November international break, then reassess. That means two games: Roma in the Champions League and Aston Villa at home.

Against that, a report cited by Football365 claims he could be 'sacked immediately'. TEAMtalk, citing a report, calls his sacking 'guaranteed' and says a target is set to be offered a huge salary. Those two versions do not fit with The Athletic's.

## What we do not know

The accounts here do not tell us who the preferred successor is, what terms United would offer, or whether anyone has approached him. No club source is quoted on any of it.

The accounts cited here include Carrick's on-record position: after the match, he told TNT Sports he would remain in charge. Travelling fans applauded him and sang his name at full-time, while aiming their frustration at the hierarchy and the out-of-form players.

Treat it as a hand someone wants you to see.
