Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is notifying about 3,182 patients that their health information may have been exposed after an employee uploaded a spreadsheet to a public AI tool the hospital had not approved.

The hospital says it found the problem on September 21, when a staff member, during an internal review, put the file into an outside platform not cleared for that use. The patients were admitted and treated between May and September 2026. The exposed details may include names, admission and treatment dates, medical record numbers, account numbers, treating departments, medications given and provider names. The hospital says there were no Social Security numbers, financial account details or other identifying information.

Hopkins says it opened an investigation, had the employee delete the prompt, thread and document from the tool's history, and asked the company behind the tool to delete the data. Letters began going out Thursday, October 22, offering 12 months of Experian IdentityWorks credit monitoring. A call center is open weekdays, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central, at 1-833-931-7766 (engagement number B174716).

Context: WYPR notes that in 2023 a breach hit the whole Johns Hopkins Health System, affecting tens of thousands of people and drawing patient lawsuits.

My take: WYPR reports, "Hopkins did not name the tool." That is the missing line item. Deleting a chat history is a button. Deleting data from a vendor's systems is a claim, and the reports do not say whether the company has confirmed it.
