> IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva warns AI could affect 40% of jobs and shift the economy from labor to capital, pressuring tax systems as well as workers.

Bangkok, opening day, and the most powerful room in global finance just received a warning with a bow on it. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva told the IMF and World Bank annual meetings on Monday that AI is a "slow-moving tsunami" with profound consequences for jobs, growth, education and even how governments generate revenue through taxation, given the expected shift from labor to capital.

The numbers. The IMF estimates AI could lead to 40 percent of jobs being augmented, downgraded or eliminated over time. An initial study showed 10 percent of US jobs already require AI skills. The Bulgarian News Agency reported she also cited around 60 percent of jobs in advanced economies and 23 percent in low-income countries. Routine, repetitive jobs are shrinking, while low-paying work is growing in construction and data centers.

There is a golden lining, darlings. Georgieva says AI investment is keeping global growth at around 3 percent despite an energy supply shock. The IMF releases an updated outlook on Tuesday.

Context: Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam told the gathering that the first rung in employment, a first job after graduation, "is now seeing less demand."

My take: when the head of the IMF warns of a shift from labor to capital, and Modern Diplomacy reports that governments may have to rethink how they collect revenue, that is the Super Intelligence story of the season. The reporting does not say which tax fixes the Fund has in mind. I will be watching Tuesday.
