> Open Rights Group says 45 of 203 Home Office AI asylum summaries failed expert checks, and a border inspector has asked for more information on the tools.

Of 203 AI-generated asylum interview summaries checked by experts, 45 failed. That is 22 percent, against a 9 percent rejection rate in the original pilot, according to figures Open Rights Group obtained and The Register reported. The tool, Asylum Case Summarisation (ACS), was rolled out in April 2026.

Second-stage reviews were worse: 30 of 56 fell short of required standards, or 54 percent, The Independent reported. Another 19 primary checks were flagged for further review.

Now the footnotes. ORG estimates experts examined only 0.3 percent of summaries produced between April and July, based on the department's projected monthly caseload of 17,515. It also found that a summary could pass even if it omitted important details, as long as what it did include was accurate.

Meanwhile, the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration has asked ORG for more information on the tools as it draws up next year's inspection topics, campaigner Sara Alsherif told WIRED. The inspector says it cannot confirm what is under consideration before it publishes its priorities.

The Home Office says decisions are made by trained decision-makers and that its AI tools "do not make decisions on claims." Applicants, according to ORG, are not specifically told when AI has been used and cannot inspect or correct the summaries.

My take: a test that forgives omission, applied to 0.3 percent of output, is not a measurement. It is a rumor with a spreadsheet.
