> Google's revised privacy policy lets connected Gmail, Drive and Photos data shape ads in Search for users who opt in. Here is the clause that did it.

Google revised its Privacy Policy, effective October 16, and its old ad promise now has an exception. The policy still says "We don’t show you personalized ads based on your content from Drive, Gmail, or Google Photos," then adds: "unless you choose to make data from these services available to other Google services that support personalized ads."

The route is opt-in. According to AndroidPure, the ad link applies once you connect content apps to Search, which Google pitches as Personal Intelligence, under Search Services Personalization in your Google Account. The policy names Search and Gemini Apps as services you may let in, and says Search may process that data "to personalize content, including ads." The Verge credits Android Authority with spotting the change.

The fine print is where the eval lives. Google's help page says ads won't be based directly on your Gmail inbox or Photos library, but ads can draw on summaries, excerpts and inferences Search derives, AndroidPure reports. Google says a subset of connected-app data in AI Mode and Ask Maps is reviewed by humans, including trained service providers. Search services may also train on those summaries and inferences, though not directly on your inbox.

Android Authority reported on October 23, 2026, that disconnecting apps may leave previously saved data in Search Services History. Search Engine Land reports Google has begun testing ads in AI Mode for Personal Intelligence users, reversing its earlier ad-free approach.

Google says it still won't target ads on sensitive categories such as race, religion, sexual orientation or health. How long saved data lingers is not stated in what we have.

My take: "not directly" is carrying the whole building.
