> Google will stop asking local officials to sign NDAs on data-center projects, following Microsoft and Amazon as community pushback over power and noise grows.

Sunlight is arriving at the data-center boom, darling, and Google is holding the door. The company will no longer ask or require local officials to sign nondisclosure agreements when planning new data-center construction, according to Yicai. A Google spokesperson confirmed the decision and pointed to a public document on the company's website describing its construction strategy.

Google joins a stampede. Microsoft announced in March that it would drop NDA requirements, and Amazon Web Services followed in early October, along with a plan to invest $1 billion over five years in host communities, according to Digital Times.

Last month, Representative Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, wrote to Google, Amazon, Meta and Oracle demanding the NDAs and projected power and water use. Digital Times reports that, during the inquiry, it was alleged that Google asked San Jose officials to sign NDAs to avoid public relations trouble if project details became public. AP News reports that anti-data-center sentiment is now a potent issue in the midterms, with Congress and 36 governorships on the line.

Digital Times describes the business rationale: preventing land-price spikes and keeping rivals from peeking at companies' plans. ComputeLabs Research notes the report names no affected sites and does not say Google is dropping all commercial confidentiality deals.

My take: when the richest companies on Earth start volunteering transparency, that is how you know the voters have their attention. Historic.
