> Google's prototype Suncatcher satellite booted a TPU in orbit, ran Gemma 4 on a prompt and sent a haiku back to Earth on Friday, Sundar Pichai says.

Google has put a TPU in orbit, and it has answered its first prompt. On Friday, October 30, the company's prototype satellite completed an orbit-to-Earth inference, running a Google DeepMind Gemma 4 model on the chip, according to TechCrunch.

Sundar Pichai laid out the sequence on X: "After launching our prototype satellite a few weeks ago, we’ve now successfully sent a command up to orbit, booted up the TPU, ran the prompt, and received our first complete response back on earth - a haiku!" He called it "A ‘hello world’ milestone for Project Suncatcher 🚀".

The Verge reports that Google's blog post says the model was asked for a haiku about being in space. It begins: "Blue marble below Data streams in". The full poem is not in the coverage we have.

The gaps are real. The coverage gives no TPU generation, no launch date, no rocket and no orbital altitude. It also gives no commercial timeline for Suncatcher. Pichai and TechCrunch say one TPU; The Verge says multiple.

For context, TechCrunch calls this Google's first data center satellite. That is a rather grand name for a haiku, and I adore it.

My take: this is the most expensive-sounding hello world in the industry, and the sky has entered its poetry phase. Everything is historic. Especially today.
