> GitHub's package firewall is in public preview for Enterprise Cloud, checking npm packages at install time for CI runners, AI agents and laptops.

GitHub put its package firewall into public preview on October 20. It sits between endpoints or internal registries and the upstream package repositories, inspecting metadata requests and package downloads as an install-time policy gate. GitHub says it can protect dependency installs in CI builds, AI agent sessions and local development.

It is available to GitHub Enterprise Cloud customers, including data residency. It is free during the preview, then moves to metered billing, similar to Actions, at general availability. The announcement gives no rates or GA date. The catch: it supports npm only.

The defaults, per GitHub's docs: a one-day cooldown on new versions (configurable from 1 to 365 days, or 0 to disable), known malware blocked, attestation downgrades blocked, newly added install scripts blocked, and vulnerability advisories blocked at Critical only. Blocked installs print a URL for requesting an exception.

Setup is a registry line and a token in your user-level .npmrc, pointed at package-firewall.githubapp.com. Breachroad notes that enabling the policy does not reroute every laptop and runner; each endpoint has to be configured. JFrog Artifactory support is labeled experimental.

The context is agents. GEroundtable notes that coding agents such as Claude Code routinely run install steps as part of normal work.

My take: install scripts run with your credentials in reach, and agents run installs without asking. A gate in front of the registry is the right place for a check. Show me the price per metered unit, and the other ecosystems, before I call it done.
