> Researchers used Gemini 4 Argon to extend counterexamples to a 1967 stellarator magnetic-field conjecture, adding test cases for fusion-design software.

Gemini 4 Argon did not disprove Harold Grad's 1967 conjecture. Read the dates before the headlines.

Grad, an NYU physicist and mathematician, conjectured that smooth, three-dimensional plasma equilibria with varying pressure cannot exist without some magnetic field symmetry. Javier Gómez-Serrano, Lukas Liehr and Mitchell Taylor posted a Lean-certified proof of counterexamples on September 21. Matt Landreman of the University of Maryland posted explicit solutions the next day, found with GPT-6 Astra Pro.

Argon's part came later. A preprint submitted October 5 by Opal Issan, Jonathan Citrin, Brendan Tracey (affiliated with Google DeepMind) and Landreman adds a symmetry-breaking parameter to both of Landreman's solution families, which shared stellarator symmetry. Set the parameter to zero and the earlier solutions return.

The team ran Gemini 4 as a small team of agents inside Google's Antigravity environment, and the paper reports that “promising candidates appeared within hours.” The authors say they re-derived and symbolically checked every derivation. Google featured the work in its October 13 launch announcement.

The payoff is modest and useful: closed-form reference cases for testing equilibrium solvers such as VMEC, used by companies like Commonwealth Fusion Systems and Type One Energy. It is not a power-producing breakthrough.

My take: a verification suite is less glamorous than a headline and considerably more real. The disclosure gives no count of discarded candidates, which is the number I would want next.
