> Google began a global release of Gemini 4 Argon across its API, Gemini app and Search. It tops the Vals Index but trails Claude Opus 5.5 in independent rankings.

Google began a global release of Gemini 4 Argon today across the API in AI Studio and the Gemini platform, Google Antigravity, the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search. Google says Argon ranks first on the Vals Index, though independent rankings reported by The Decoder place it behind at least two rivals.

That gap between the press release and the leaderboard is the story, so let's read both.

## Who gets it, and who does not

Access depends on how much you pay. Developers and enterprises get Argon through the API. Google AI Ultra subscribers get it in Antigravity. Ultra and Pro subscribers get it in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search.

Free users and paying Plus subscribers are left out. According to The Decoder, they remain on the weaker Flash models under a new tier structure. Global availability does not mean access at every subscription tier. The timing of a Gemini 4 Flash release for free and Plus users remains an open question.

The API price is $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cached input tokens 95 percent off. 9to5Google reports that this introductory rate runs until November 30, 2026. After that it becomes $4 and $20, so the price doubles. Anyone budgeting a product around Argon should plan for the second number.

The Gemini app also gets some furniture. Antigravity's agentic coding interface now sits inside the Gemini macOS app, a main chat toggle switches between chat and tasks, and Gemini connects to more than 40 apps, including Instacart, OpenTable, Adobe and Shopify.

## What Google measured

Google's claim is that Argon's depth and precision across multi-step tasks lead it to outperform other frontier models, and it cites the #1 spot on the Vals Index, which covers finance, coding, legal and tax work. Google's description gives no score and no named runner-up for that ranking.

Most of the rest is a tour of internal results. From Google:

- Teams using Argon in Antigravity increased agentic code submissions by more than 35 percent and cut code rollbacks by nearly a third.
- Argon helped the Chrome team separate core webpage handling from a roughly 6 million line legacy folder inside Chromium's 40 million line codebase.
- Working autonomously overnight on the open-source Agent Development Kit, it produced optimizations, now live in google/adk-python, that cut in-memory session prep time by 40 percent in long sessions and sped up cold imports by 21 percent.

Separately, 9to5Google reports that Argon in Antigravity helped halve the CPU footprint of YouTube's comments frontend. Argon found that redundant emoji rendering accounted for nearly 45 percent of server overhead, which led to 12 targeted optimizations, with 30 ms less server comment-load latency and 20 ms less client end-to-end latency.

The most checkable number is a research result. Using Argon, Google researchers report a 2.85x end-to-end inference speedup for Gemma 4 E2B on an A100 via vLLM, from about 37,900 to over 108,000 tokens per second, with 100 percent token parity. Token parity is a useful detail: the reported speedup came with matching token output.

The quantum claims are the most exotic. Google says Argon translated an internal version of its AlphaQubit error correction decoder into a single optimized hardware kernel, nearly doubling inference throughput. It also says Argon generated an arcsin quantum subroutine, verified in Lean, that lowers spacetime cost by more than 100x against a quantum CORDIC baseline. A proof checker is a better witness than a blog adjective.

On embodied reasoning, Argon scored 87 percent on ERQA. Google also says movements learned from video, transferred to Apptronik's Apollo humanoid, produced seven consecutive cornhole shots in a real-world trial. Seven is a nice number. The material gives no ERQA comparison and no count of misses.

## The ranking problem

Here the independent view arrives. The Decoder reports that Argon holds the top spot on the Vals Index but trails Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 in independent overall rankings. Because Google waited roughly two weeks to ship, The Decoder adds, it also sits behind Meta's Muse Wonder Full, which launched just before.

A social post from @testingcatalog goes further and says Argon placed 5th on the Arena Overall leaderboard. That is an unverified report, and I would treat it as a pointer to where to look, not as a result.

None of this makes the #1 on the Vals Index false. It makes it one table among several, chosen by the company that won it. A model can lead a finance, legal and tax index and still trail in broader overall rankings. Those are different questions.

## What to watch

First, the independent leaderboards. Watch whether Argon closes the gap with Claude Opus 5.5 and Muse Wonder Full in subsequent independent rankings. If it does not, #1 on one index will be doing a lot of work.

Second, the price increase after November 30. Whether developers stay at $4 and $20 is the real adoption test.

Third, the research giveaway. Google is offering 10,000 scientists the highest Antigravity usage tier free for 6 months, onboarded on a rolling basis and subject to eligibility, capacity and selection. If the results are as good as the Gemma speedup, they will show up in papers with methods sections.

Show me the eval, not the vibe. Google has shown several. It has not shown the one where Argon loses.
