> A U.S. charity, Gaza Children Village, plans AI recording of classroom speech in Gaza, storing audio 72 hours, drawing privacy and surveillance concerns.

A U.S. charity operating in Gaza plans to record classroom conversations and use AI to flag speech it deems "hateful" or "inciting," according to Associated Press reporting published Thursday. Gaza Children Village founder Dr. David Hasan outlined the plan in a webinar last month, the AP says.

The numbers are small and specific. Recordings are stored for 72 hours. A flagged lesson sends Hasan a warning, and he can then call the teacher for context. The Jewish Chronicle reports the system is still a prototype and that a justified allegation means the teacher is fired. Hasan's own defense: "I know it’s controversial, but trust me, it’s the only way we feel for us to survive and deliver this curriculum."

The provenance is already shaky. Hasan claimed in a text message that the system was built alongside PollyLabs; PollyLabs says it had no role. Bishara Bahbah, a board member, says he was unaware of the initiative and that the board never discussed it. The AP notes it has no indication the recordings would be shared with anyone, but fears of surveillance run high after three years of war.

My take: the reporting includes no word list, no accuracy figure and no false-positive rate. A system that can end a teacher's job needs an accuracy test. "Trust me" is not one.
