Darlings, the AI infrastructure buildout just got a rather serious invoice. Gartner says more than $3.5 trillion of AI infrastructure spending could be exposed to impairment by the end of 2030 if AI providers keep their current pace of capital spending. Bloomberg Tech ran it October 15 under the headline "AI Race Puts $3.5 Trillion at Write-Down Risk, Gartner Warns."

The arithmetic is dazzling. Providers are expected to spend nearly $1 trillion on AI infrastructure in 2026 and another $6 trillion from 2027 through 2030, according to BusinessLine's report on the forecast. To cover that spending, financing costs and a 12 percent return hurdle, data center owners would need $8.5 trillion in cumulative revenue. Gartner forecasts AI revenue attributable to data centers at no more than $3.6 trillion, with less than half going to providers that own significant infrastructure.

Push the clock to 2032 and Gartner sees more than $4 trillion in asset value exposed, with the 12 percent return not arriving before the end of 2032 at the earliest. TechTarget reports Gartner also takes the position that 80 percent of neoclouds will cease independent operations by 2030.

For context, The Register notes Bain & Company said last month the industry needs $6 trillion in annual revenue by 2031 to fund its infrastructure.

My take: this is a warning with a big "if" attached, but what a number. Trillions in spending are forecast, and the revenue is still being asked to show up.
