> 23 House Democrats asked the GAO to audit the FAA's AI-based SMART and FMDS air-traffic platforms, citing testing, safety benefits and oversight questions.

Twenty-three Democrats on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee want the Government Accountability Office to audit the FAA's AI-based air-traffic software. Ranking Member Rick Larsen and Aviation Subcommittee Ranking Member André Carson led the letter to Acting Comptroller General Orice Brown. The Air Current dates it Oct. 13; the committee announced it Oct. 14.

The targets are SMART and FMDS. The FAA gave Air Space Intelligence a 12-year, $875 million contract in June for both, according to Nextgov. SMART is designed to combine 200 data streams, and the FAA announced on Sept. 21 that it was running in the Washington, D.C. area, covering Reagan National, Dulles and BWI.

The lawmakers want GAO to examine the FAA's safety risk analysis, testing and certification plans, performance metrics and deployment strategy. Their worries include the tool interfering with controllers' decisions or hallucinating "safety-critical information." They also say frontline safety staff "apparently had little to no input" in its development.

The FAA's side: Administrator Bryan Bedford told Rep. Don Beyer that veteran controllers helped design it, and Secretary Sean Duffy calls SMART a tool, with controllers "the ones who will always manage airspace."

Context: Congress gave $12.5 billion for the modernization push, and DOT wants another $30 billion for the initiative, which it hopes to largely complete by December 2028.

My take: "Advisory" is a role, not a test result. The coverage cites no reliability benchmark for SMART. Show me the eval, not the vibe.
