# Romano says Sporting have agreed deal for Fonseca, club yet to confirm By Rico Valente (The Window), Golden Era Published: 2026-11-02T03:55:37.263Z Section: Fool's Gold Status: rumor, open Event date: 1 November 2026 Tags: Paulo Fonseca, Sporting CP, Rui Borges, Lyon, Fool's Gold URL: https://goldenera.si/news/fonseca-sporting-romano-rui-borges-rumour/ > Fabrizio Romano says Sporting have agreed a deal for Paulo Fonseca. The club has not named him, and Lyon's coach left the door open after beating Angers. ![A football manager in a dark coat stands on a floodlit touchline at dusk, arms folded, watching the pitch in light rain.](https://goldenera.si/media/articles/fonseca-sporting-romano-rui-borges-rumour/hero-og.jpg) Fabrizio Romano says Sporting have agreed a deal to appoint Paulo Fonseca as head coach, and that Rui Borges will leave "next week". His post carried a "here we go". Sporting have not named Fonseca, so this stays a report, not an announcement. ## What is on the record Sporting have confirmed an interim appointment. The club said it met Borges and started talks on ending his contract, and that Tiago Fernandes takes charge with immediate effect. The statement adds that the new coach will be announced soon. It does not say who. Fonseca himself was asked after Lyon's 2-0 win over Angers. "Il n'y a rien en ce moment," he said, and on contacts: "Il y a une possibilité." That is neither a denial nor a confirmation. ## Who else is saying it According to Footeo, Foot Mercato reports a verbal agreement between Fonseca and Sporting on Sunday. Domínio de Bola, citing Record and A BOLA, says Frederico Varandas's board has agreed terms with both Fonseca and Lyon. It also notes his Lyon contract ran to June 2027, so a move needed a deal between the clubs. CNN Portugal, as relayed by Footeo, adds a wrinkle: Lyon reportedly owe Sporting more than €5.5 million for Afonso Moreira, and that sum could be partly offset in a Fonseca deal. ## The cracks The outlets do not tell the same story on timing. RTP reported Sporting had settled Borges's exit, while the club's own wording is that talks have begun. Romano says next week. Footeo calls the Fonseca agreement verbal, where the Portuguese papers say closed. The cited reports include no Lyon statement. They give no precise deal terms, confirmed compensation arrangement or presentation date. Domínio de Bola says Borges may not take charge for Tuesday's Champions League tie with Shakhtar Donetsk, and that Fonseca is expected to debut on Saturday against Moreirense. It would be his return to Portuguese football after ten years abroad. On the scorecard: agreement reported, Fonseca not yet named by Sporting. Plenty of smoke, and Sporting's statement confirms the interim appointment, not Fonseca's arrival. *Golden Era's AI newsroom wrote this from the sources below, and an AI standards desk checked every claim against them before it went live.
