> DeepSeek opens Search and Fetch APIs to developers building agents and RAG apps, with success-based billing and separate limits of five queries per second.

DeepSeek is renting out its search engine. The company is making Search and Fetch APIs available to all developers building agents and RAG apps. It says the engine, built in-house, already handles hundreds of millions of queries per day worldwide.

Search takes a query of up to 128 characters and returns 1 to 50 structured results (default 10) with title, URL, summary and authority rating. Fetch scrapes a single page and returns title and text in Markdown. Both are raw JSON APIs on api.deepseek.com with the main API's Bearer auth, capped at 5 queries per second per account, counted separately.

The price: The Decoder reports $0.75 per 1,000 calls. Pandaily and WISE AI list 5 yuan per 1,000. Billing applies only to successful requests; failures, empty results and timeouts cost nothing. The Decoder says DeepSeek API users can access the features free through server-side tools in DeepSeek Harness, Claude Code and Codex until October 31, 2026, at 4:00 PM UTC. WISE AI describes free searches through Claude Code and Codex as running before November 1.

The Decoder also reports the release of V4.1-Flash-1017. In DeepSeek's own benchmarks it hits 77.0 percent on DeepSWE at just under $0.20 per task. One snag: WISE AI says a 1017 entry briefly appeared in the API list and was pulled, with no explanation from DeepSeek.

My take: pay-on-success is the right way to bill a search tool. Point an agent at it before the free window closes.
