> DeepSeek released Ascend support for six repositories, but SemiAnalysis says only TileLang was usable at the time of its report. Hardware gaps remain.

On September 30, right before China's National Day holidays, DeepSeek released Ascend support for six repositories: TileLang, DeepGEMM, DeepEP, TileKernels, FlashMLA and DeepSelect. In a WeChat post, DeepSeek said it partnered with Huawei on programming tools to build an independent software ecosystem and cut reliance on Nvidia. It says TileLang offers "a simpler programming model" than CUDA, and that the two companies advanced a "supernode" solution built on 128 Ascend 950 chips.

Now the fine print. At the time of its report, SemiAnalysis said only TileLang was usable; the other repositories required the then-unreleased CANN 9.2.0. DeepEP-Ascend's published numbers ran on a manually configured development kit that is not public, and its README pointed to a commercial release around October 15, depending on Huawei. The material gives no confirmation that it shipped.

On hardware, SemiAnalysis puts the Ascend 950PR behind Nvidia's H100 in absolute compute, between the A100 and AMD's MI300X. For tested BF16 matrix-multiplication shapes below Ascend's ridge, the 950PR's median performance reached 41.5% of its attainable level, versus 46.8% for the H100.

Context: Huawei unveiled its next AI processors and supernode systems two weeks before the release, and said it expects them to be widely used for model training next year.

My take: this is real software work, merged into the main TileLang repository, and it is a better exit ramp than a press release. But an exit ramp that, at the time of that report, mostly depended on unreleased software is a diagram of a road.
