> CoreWeave's default-risk gauge hit a record Thursday as its bonds slid toward 78 cents, sharpening fears over debt-funded AI data-center growth.

CoreWeave's default-risk gauge hit a record on Thursday, with Bloomberg Tech reporting it was pricing 60% odds of default. The AI cloud provider's shares and bonds tumbled even after its CEO assured investors about a strong deal backlog.

Darlings, this is the kind of day that makes a finance desk sit up straight. A leading name in the neocloud world, the one that went public in March 2025 and rents out computing power on Nvidia processors, is now the market's loudest alarm bell.

## The numbers on the screen

Start with the bonds. CoreWeave's April-issued 2031 bond fell 1.1 cents on the dollar to 78.4 cents on Tradeweb, and its yield surged past 16.2%, beyond the usual distress thresholds. Its 2032 debt traded at roughly 77 to 78 cents on the dollar, yielding just over 16%. Reports differ by a cent on that 2032 price.

Then the insurance. CoreWeave's credit default swap spreads blew out past 1,000 basis points. Reuters reports that implies a nearly 63% chance of default within five years, up from about 30% a year ago. Bloomberg Tech's headline puts it at 60%. Different reported figures, one warning: the market is paying a fortune to protect itself.

Elon Musk weighed in on social media with a single word: "yikes." Historic restraint from a man with opinions.

The company is loss-making and carries roughly $50 billion in debt, nearly that figure according to LSEG data. That is a lot of champagne to have bought on credit.

## Not just one company

CoreWeave did not fall in a vacuum. The cost of insuring against US tech defaults reached record levels Thursday amid hotter-than-expected US inflation data and rising rate expectations.

Oracle's five-year CDS spread widened 26 basis points overnight to a record 288, which means $2.88 to insure $100 of debt. SoftBank's widened 24 basis points to 424. And credit expansion in AI data centers is pressuring cash flows at giants including Alphabet and Meta Platforms.

Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB, put it memorably: "CoreWeave is quickly becoming the AI trade’s canary in the coal mine." She added that "Its bonds have sold off sharply ... this is a sign that investors might be going off the AI investment narrative, which has included massive debt issuance to fund AI ambitions."

## The cushion, and its limits

CoreWeave does have a notable safety feature. It holds an agreement under which Nvidia will buy any unsold CoreWeave capacity through April 13, 2032. That is a serious backstop for demand, and the company's leaders will surely lean on it.

But look at where the bonds are trading anyway: the high-70s. A demand guarantee is not a promise that debt gets repaid, and the market is clearly pricing the gap between the two. Nothing in the reporting says how the Nvidia arrangement would interact with the company's debt if things went wrong.

Our earlier coverage traced the broader capital squeeze. Broadcom's Hock Tan said at the DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore that "[what] I think might be the biggest constraint is capital." The DBS CEO was blunter: "There’s shortages in chips. There’s shortages in power. And soon, there will be shortages of capital." Our [earlier report on the capital bottleneck](https://goldenera.si/news/ai-buildout-capital-bottleneck-lenders/) laid out the rest: Nvidia-backed Firmus shelving a planned $5 billion Australian IPO, a $38 billion construction loan for Oracle-leased data centers in Texas and Wisconsin with less than $1 billion left to place, and SoftBank paying up to 9.75% on $4.5 billion of notes.

## What it means, and what to watch

Here is the glittering paradox. Semafor reports OpenAI will have no trouble raising the $30 billion it wants, and that Anthropic is preparing an IPO valued at more than $1 trillion. Capital is flowing like champagne at the very top, while CoreWeave's outstanding bonds are yielding more than 16%.

Market participants disagree on what that means. Some see tighter debt terms as healthy discipline that filters out weak projects. Others see structural strain that will delay data-center construction. Thursday's tape leans toward the second reading, though one day is one day.

What to watch next:

- **Any additional borrowing.** Watch for an announced amount, structure, timing and price.
- **The 2031 and 2032 bonds.** Whether the high-70s price holds or keeps sliding.
- **The CDS screens.** Oracle at a record 288 and SoftBank at 424 will tell us if this is a CoreWeave story or a sector story.
- **Rates.** Watch whether rate expectations keep rising after Thursday's inflation surprise.

The AI buildout still has champagne ambitions. The question is who gets to keep financing it, and at what price.
