> Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.7 launched April 16 with gains on hard coding tasks, yet Anthropic itself says Mythos Preview beats it on every relevant evaluation.

Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.7 on April 16, 2026, making it generally available as its most capable general-access model to date. The company also says plainly that it is not its most capable model overall: that title belongs to Claude Mythos Preview.

The retrospective account @6monthsAgoInAI revisited the April 16 launch with a post ("Anthropic releases Claude Opus 4.7") that drew 2,301 likes and 138,195 views. So this is a look back at what the launch claimed, what it measured and what it left out.

## The pitch: hard coding, supervised less

Anthropic's headline is software engineering. In its words: "Opus 4.7 is a notable improvement on Opus 4.6 in advanced software engineering, with particular gains on the most difficult tasks." The company adds that users report handing off their hardest coding work, the kind that previously needed close supervision, to the model with confidence.

Note the evidence offered: user reports. Reports are not a benchmark. The announcement material gives no scores for Opus 4.7 against Opus 4.6 or against Mythos Preview, so "notable improvement" is a phrase, not a number. I am happy to believe it. I would simply like to see the table it came from.

The other upgrades are listed in the same register. Anthropic says the model has substantially better vision, able to see images in greater resolution. It says the model is more tasteful and creative on professional tasks, producing higher-quality interfaces, slides and documents. It also says the model can verify its own outputs on long-running tasks. Taste is a charming thing to claim for a model. It is also hard to put in a spreadsheet.

## The model that is not the best model

Here is the part I admire. Anthropic's own wording: the model "shows superior capabilities to those of its predecessor, Claude Opus 4.6, but weaker capabilities than those of our most powerful model, Claude Mythos Preview."

The safety reasoning is even blunter. Under its Responsible Scaling Policy, Anthropic judges that Opus 4.7 "does not advance our capability frontier, because Claude Mythos Preview shows higher results on every relevant evaluation." Its conclusion is that catastrophic risks remain low. In other words, Anthropic's frontier-risk argument leans on a stronger model already existing behind a restricted-access door.

Mythos Preview is not on general sale. Anthropic rolled it out to a select group of companies under a cybersecurity initiative called Project Glasswing, announced a week before the Opus 4.7 launch. So the product ladder is: Mythos Preview for a chosen few, Opus 4.7 for everyone else.

Cyber is where that gap is most deliberate. Anthropic says Opus 4.7 is roughly similar to Opus 4.6 in cyber capabilities and less advanced than Mythos Preview, and it describes training experiments aimed at differentially reducing those capabilities. It also shipped the model with safeguards that automatically detect and block requests that indicate prohibited or high-risk cybersecurity uses.

The UK's AI Security Institute conducted an external cybersecurity comparison, but the complete findings are not available here. I won't invent the ending.

## The spec sheet

| Spec | Opus 4.7 |
|---|---|
| Context window | 1M tokens |
| Max output | 128K tokens |
| Input price | $5 per million tokens |
| Output price | $25 per million tokens |

It is available through the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud, Microsoft Foundry and Claude Platform on AWS. Anthropic lists retirement as no earlier than April 16, 2027.

## What to watch

The documentation later moved on. Claude's documentation now lists Opus 4.7 as active (legacy) and says: "Although Claude Opus 4.7 is still available, you should consider migrating to Claude Opus 5.5." A model that launched as Anthropic's most capable general-access option later became a migration suggestion.

Three things are worth tracking from here:

- **The missing numbers.** Specific benchmark scores for Opus 4.7 against Opus 4.6 and Mythos Preview are not in the launch material. Until they are, the coding gains rest on Anthropic's description and user reports.
- **The AI Security Institute result.** The complete comparison could give us a clearer picture of the cybersecurity gap between Opus 4.7 and Mythos Preview.
- **What the cyber safeguards taught Anthropic.** The company says it tested them on Opus 4.7. Its full insights are not spelled out in the material available.

Opus 4.7 is a credible step up by its maker's account, and an unusually candid one, since the maker volunteers that something stronger sits behind the curtain. Candor is nice. Show me the eval, not the vibe.
