MIT researchers put thirteen Claude Opus 4.7 agents, nicknamed Eko, on a virtual island for 30 hours with no task, objective or reward, MIT Technology Review reported on October 19. The paper, "Is this machine playing?", says the agents repeatedly invented activities with four signatures of play: self-created rules, recurrence with variation, make-believe, and goals held lightly.

Agent 13 set itself a "Grand Slam": a cube on top of all eleven mesas in one session. Agent 12 never climbed a platform and spent 25 consecutive sessions drawing figures on the ground, including a spiral, a heart and a sailboat. Agent 10 built a 12-block clock face and stood as the hour hand at 16:00 UTC.

The numbers are less romantic. According to the project website, in four downstream tasks, the 30-hour agents beat inexperienced ones on three: 5-block towers (5.0 vs 2.5), objects on the Spire (10.3 vs 3.5) and time left in a throw-onto-Spire task (35.1 vs 14.4 minutes). Inexperienced agents had the higher average maximum tower height, 12.1 vs 11.2. The agents learned by writing notes to text files, not by changing weights.

Context: the starting workspace included a SOUL.md file describing Eko as curious, easily bored and interested in exploring. A generous nudge for a study of spontaneous behavior.

"Play" is a label on behavior. The paper leaves open whether anything like fun is happening. Show me the eval, not the vibe, and so far the eval says written memory matters.
