> Caseway's Al Vigier is turning away from new U.S. government opportunities and a San Francisco pitch before investors capable of $50M to $100M rounds.

A Vancouver AI company just walked out of a room full of big-money possibilities. Caseway, which builds AI tools for legal and defense work, is turning away from U.S. government opportunities, according to Global News. Founder and CEO Al Vigier also pulled out of the AI Conference in San Francisco, The San Francisco Standard reported.

The stakes were big. Caseway had one of just eight presentation spots, a shot at investors who write checks Vigier put at "$50 million" to "100 million dollar rounds." He flew to Ottawa instead. "We’re pulling out for the next few years until there’s some clarity or stability," he said.

His reason is political. "I’m not comfortable going in and helping the U.S. with their AI needs at the same time that they’re threatening us," he told Global News, and he pointed to Donald Trump's repeated "51st state" suggestions. Caseway will now focus on Canadian defense and look at Europe and Taiwan. It will honor existing contracts, including a partnership with a California company selling to the state courts system that lets Caseway grow from 15 employees to 40. It is still deciding on new U.S. legal work.

The context: Caseway's defense push began less than a year ago, prompted by a $75,000 Canadian government grant. Ottawa says it plans to act as an anchor customer for Canadian AI companies.

My take? Vigier calls software "essentially tariff-proof," but passing up a big-money pitch for a principle is the kind of bet only a founder with conviction makes. Dazzling. And expensive.
