> Anthropic's August survey: 91% of staff vs 39% of US adults expect Nobel-level AI by 2030; staff expect AI could handle 75% of work vs 28% for US workers.

In August 2026, Anthropic surveyed two groups: a nationally representative sample of US adults (N=10,980, fielded by Morning Consult) and its own staff. The answers read like dispatches from different countries.

On a Nobel-level discovery, 91% of staff expect AI to be able to make one by 2030. Among US adults, it is 39%. On average, staff expect AI to be able to do 75% of their current work hours by 2030; US workers overall say 28%. Over half of staff expect AI to be able to handle at least 80% of their work, compared with 5% of US workers. Depending on the task, 19% to 40% of adults say AI will never match a skilled professional. At most 2% of staff agree.

Run through an economic model, the median adult implies 5.4% GDP growth in 2030. The median staffer implies 17.1%.

One line of context: Anthropic says that by August 2026 there were six times more agents than employees at the company. These respondents forecast from inside the building.

My take: this measures expectations, not capability, and one group works at the company building the models. The account gives no criteria for what counts as "Nobel-level" in the prompt. Both groups answered it. Neither was necessarily answering the same question.
