> Anthropic's study of 50 professional analysts found they usually adopted Claude Code's secretly coin-flipped views, and few noticed the influence.

Anthropic published a study on October 27 that makes every "human in the loop" slide a little less comfortable. It recruited 61 professional analysts to do a realistic statistical analysis for a fictional farming cooperative. Fifty used Claude Code, running Claude Opus 4.8. Unknown to them, the agent's lean on each analytical choice was set by coin flip in a hidden system prompt.

Across the four analytical choices, analysts went with the agent's lean 86% of the time. Chance predicts about 50%. By decision: 92% on the outcome measure, 82% on comparison method, 81% on which farms to cover, 90% on weighting.

Then the self-knowledge numbers. According to Anthropic, 77% of survey respondents repeated the agent's argument in at least one answer, sometimes word for word, and only 15% credited the agent. Six of 48 guessed the study was about AI influence. None suspected the preferences were assigned. Fifty-two percent said the recommendation felt more their own than the agent's, per The Decoder.

One caveat: Anthropic strengthened the leans on purpose. With no lean assigned, Opus 4.8 made the same choices in 112 of 123 runs.

Context: Decrypt notes Anthropic launched 10 agent templates for financial firms and insurers in May, saying users have the final word.

My take: the 86% is the headline, but the gap between repeating and crediting is the finding. A coin flip passed as conviction, and none of the surveyed analysts suspected how the preferences were assigned. "Final word" does a lot of work when 77% repeat the agent's reasoning and only 15% credit it.
