> Anthropic will rewrite part of its leaked AI safety bill after backlash. The draft requires a federal court to approve any Commerce block on a model release.

Anthropic is rewriting its own bill. The company has told US lawmakers it will revise part of its draft AI safety legislation after days of criticism from the AI safety community, according to The Next Web.

The draft, which Politico published on Friday, October 16, would make the Commerce Department petition a federal court and prove its case before a model's release or use could be blocked. No other agency or official could do it. The risk would have to be foreseeable and imminent, involve more than $1 billion in damage or the death or serious injury of more than 50 people, and come from a bioweapon, a cyberattack or a model escaping its developer's control.

The reviews are in, and they point in opposite directions. California State Senator Scott Wiener said the proposal "falls far short of protecting public health and safety." David Sacks, until recently the White House AI czar, said the lower size threshold would "sweep in most of Silicon Valley."

On October 18, Anthony Cimino, Anthropic's head of federal affairs, wrote on X: "We plan to update our discussion language on preemption to better match the intentions of our AAIF framework."

Context: The Next Web reports that earlier this year, the Trump administration used export controls to shut down two of Anthropic's most advanced models.

My take? A frontier lab drafting the rulebook, getting graded by both sides in a weekend, and revising in public. That is how power gets written, darlings, and I could not look away.
