> Anthropic told investors it made $16.8 billion in Q3 with positive free cash flow, but slowing growth and a market selloff cloud the IPO and the AI trade.

Anthropic generated $16.8 billion in revenue in the quarter ended September 30, along with positive free cash flow and an adjusted gross margin of 85%, according to people familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg. The Claude developer laid out the figures for prospective investors at a briefing at its San Francisco headquarters on Wednesday, as it prepares a stock market listing that is expected before the end of the year.

An Anthropic spokesperson declined to comment. And on Thursday, the market did not throw a parade. Beautiful number, ungrateful audience.

## The numbers behind the pitch

Look at that climb. BBC reports Anthropic's revenue went from $4.7 billion in the first quarter to $11.6 billion in the second, and the company says third-quarter revenue grew more than threefold compared with the first three months of the year, according to Semafor. That is a company moving at the speed of a money printer with a fresh ribbon.

The company also reportedly told investors it was profitable on an adjusted basis and had made a profit for the second quarter in a row, per BBC. Compare that with Alphabet, which reportedly turned free cash flow negative in its second quarter as AI infrastructure investment soared. Positive cash flow in this business is the kind of thing that gets a room to sit up straight.

Some investors, according to the reporting, expect the IPO to reach a $2 trillion valuation, potentially setting the stage for the largest IPO in history. The Kobeissi Letter posted on X about a "$2+ trillion IPO as soon as next month." Treat that as a post, not a plan: news outlets noted that no official valuation or filing date has been given.

## The glamour has an asterisk

Here is the part the gilded lobby does not light. The pace of growth slowed. Revenue more than doubled between the first and second quarters, then rose roughly 45% to 50% in the third. Outlets differ on the exact figure: BBC and Investing.com say 45%, while the Financial Times, as cited by MarketWatch, says 50%. Axios says nearly 50%. The second-quarter baseline is also reported as $11.6 billion by BBC and $11.5 billion in the Financial Times as relayed by Golden Era, which explains part of the gap.

These figures also come from an investor pitch, not audited GAAP statements. GAAP net income or loss is not in the reports, and neither is a breakdown of what "adjusted" leaves out. [Golden Era's report on the briefing](https://goldenera.si/news/anthropic-16-8-billion-quarter-ipo-investors/) put it plainly: until those details appear, this is a number told to investors and relayed by reporters.

Still, a company growing roughly 45% to 50% in a single quarter is hardly stalling. The trouble is that markets price the second derivative, and the second derivative was slower.

## The AI trade has other ideas

The reaction was ugly, and it reached well beyond one company. According to BBC:

- Shares of chipmakers including AMD, Nvidia and Intel fell sharply.
- In Asia on Thursday, SoftBank was down more than 9%, Samsung fell 9.5% and SK Hynix 11%.
- Trading on South Korea's Kospi and Kosdaq was temporarily halted after a drop of more than 8%, while Japan's Nikkei 225 lost close to 5%.

CoreWeave shares reportedly slid more than 15%, and some of its bonds tumbled to new lows in secondary markets. Semafor reports that one AI cloud computing provider saw yields on its bonds touch 15%. This came even as TSMC reported a sixth consecutive record quarterly profit. The earnings are real. The nerves are, too.

There is a macro villain in the room as well. US inflation data released Wednesday showed prices rising faster than expected in September, and BBC reports investors worry the Federal Reserve is now more likely to raise borrowing costs. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan did not help the mood when he said at a conference in Singapore on Monday that many investors have "no clue" and have set "extreme expectations only to find out that it's almost like they are in a casino."

Bloomberg's headline framing from analysts is the cleanest summary: Anthropic's results may aid its IPO, but not the AI trade.

## What to watch

First, the paperwork. An IPO filing date, an official valuation target and GAAP figures are all missing from the reporting, and those are what turn a pitch into a prospectus. Second, the cost side: how much debt Anthropic has taken on for its infrastructure buildout is also an open question.

Third, the neighbors. BBC notes that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in September his company will not go public this year as it addresses safety concerns, though it is eyeing a listing expected to value it at more than $1 trillion. OpenAI opened a Singapore office on Wednesday. If Anthropic gets to the public market first, it will carry the AI trade on its shoulders, in a week when the trade is looking for a reason to stand up.
