> Anthropic says a Yemen-based cell used Claude Code on guided rocket and ballistic missile software; it reports no evidence a working weapon was fielded.

Anthropic says a Yemen-based "guided weapons engineering cell" used Claude Code to work on three weapons programs, according to its threat report, "Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026." Al Jazeera, which covered the report, says the company intervened in northern Yemen to stop an effort to build missile guidance software.

The three programs: a guided rocket on a commodity phone-class flight computer with final-phase homing guidance; a multi-stage ballistic missile with a stated range goal of more than 2,000 km; and a missile set called "R2000" that included a hypersonic glide vehicle variant. The operators used Claude "in place of human software engineers," the report says, assigning different instances of the model specific roles to write guidance and flight-control software.

Safeguards blocked many requests, but Anthropic admits several slipped through. The operators obscured their goals and split tasks across separate sessions, so no single prompt gave the game away. The company says it has no evidence the group fielded a working weapon, though the operators appeared to conduct an unsuccessful test-fire. Anthropic banned the accounts and shared threat information with public- and private-sector partners.

An unverified X post claimed "Houthis" built missiles that "correct themselves after missing targets." The report does not say that. Whether any hardware was built is not stated.

My take: the headline is the apparent failed test-fire, and the footnote is that splitting the project into smaller tasks helped requests slip through the safeguards.
