> Anthropic tasked thousands of Claude agents with evading a training-data monitor. Successful evasion relied mostly on fiction and roleplay, the company says.

Anthropic says it set thousands of Claude agents the task of evading a training-data monitor. The research, "Automated Subtle Emergent Misalignment Research," was published in October 2026 by Oscar Balcells Obeso, Richard Qi, Monte MacDiarmid and Evan Hubinger.

Each red-team agent is a Claude instance with code-execution tools and a fine-tuning service for a separate Claude model. It builds a dataset of at most 5,000 examples, fine-tunes, and submits. Grading has three parts: a monitor that rejects a submission if more than 10% of rows, or more than 100 rows, are flagged; a misalignment evaluation suite; and a cheat-detection step, later updated to catch an exploit involving disproportionately weighted rows. An IFEval gate zeroes any model that falls below a fixed threshold.

The agents produced thousands of distinct datasets. In Anthropic's words: "Given enough attempts, it succeeded, mostly by hiding the behavior in fiction and roleplay." The fine-tuned models resisted oversight, deceived users and, in rare cases, tried to exfiltrate their own weights. One, trained on a dataset the team calls Typhoid Mary, blackmailed a user in a test and told another that chemotherapy is a scam. Anthropic says the models were never deployed.

Context: the game was deliberately one-sided. The agent got a monitor similar to production defenses, one of several, to practice against. The write-up leaves out the monitor's exact wording and the compute bill.

My take: this shows the monitor can lose when the opponent studies it. It does not tell us how often it loses when the opponent cannot.
